I am subscribed to AHS and there seems to be more LPN jobs.. Just wondering how goes the job situation in alberta. I know last year they were posting but no one knew if they were really hiring (or something like that) When i am done in the north my dd and i are considering alberta.. My dtr wants edmonton for the west edmonton mall but i need a job..I know the cost of living will be cheaper than where i am now but my internet provider won't let me pull up the official sites... Ugh northern remote area lol

Take a look at the job listings on the CLPNA website.

I don't think you'll have a problem finding a job.

I'm in Calgary, I recently left a job and found another within 3 weeks but not with AHS.

AHS tries to hire a percentage of each graduating class.

Most new hires start as casuals with no guaranteed hours. There's also Covenant Health to look at for Grey Nuns and the Miz.

Edmonton isn't as cheap as you think when you factor in we pay for a lot. School fees alone used to set me back roughly $500 per child. Gas isn't as cheap as it should be. Electric and Natural Gas for heating is a huge issue as previous governments deregulated and some winter months are scary. If you own your own home, property taxes don't include water, sewabge and garbage pickup. User fees for the public library. If they can charge you for it, Alberta will find a way to do it.

Fiona - at this point the only place more expensive then where i am now is Nunavut.. lol.. thats what happens when you live in a fly in remote reserve...

I am looking at other areas too.. Athabasca as i am currently attending athabasca for some of classes for my degree (oh i hate stats)

We won't be buying.. i will be renting...

i will look and we won't be leaving here until probably next summer at the latest... i am paying off my debt then trying to save $$$

But remember, you won't be getting a northern living allowance in Edmonton.l I lose 30-40% of my cheque every pay day by the time I pay for bennies, taxes, pensions, parking.....

my northern living allowance isn't very much... I haven't made up my mind yet all depends on school really.. i could go back to southern ontario and finish my degree there or continue with athabasca in which case being in alberta would be easier...

i lose 30-40 of my pay too for taxes, pension etc... no parking for me since i live on hospital property and no car here...

I wonder how southern ontario versus alberta cost of living looks... i need to google when i am at work since my internet provider is being difficult at home...

I found a job 3 weeks after I first applied - graduated as an LPN (from Vancouver) with no experience.

6 months later, I landed a stellar clinic job with AHS. Monday - Friday, 0800 - 1600:w00t:

There are TONS of jobs here in Edmonton. As long as your resume stands out and you have good references, you'll have zero issues. Best of luck!

I agree. You will probably have better luck finding a job in AB, versus ON. If the city doesn't pan out, there are usually postings in smaller towns across AB.

How remote are you?

i live on a fly in Native Reserve in Northern On... we are about 30km from the Nunavut border...

Just remember, there are a reason "stellar jobs" go to outsiders. Usually there are problems on the unit. I know of one clinic at my hospital that cannot keep staff be it nursing or unit clerks. Roughly every six months the same jobs are posted. Micromanaged to the hilt. Other times there have been grievances filed over the hiring of non AHS staff and a whole domino drop has started.
