I love when patients tell me that I'm so great, I should be a doctor. The first thing I tell them is that I'm offended. They look surprised, and then I go on to tell them that I used to want to be a doctor... until I realized that nurses do all the "real" work. They nod and kinda' sorta' agree. Then I go on to ask when they saw their dr last and how long the dr was in there. They stop to think for a minute. Then I ask if I matters how long I've spent with them and know about them compared to what their experience with their dr was. That's the "aha" moment. I love it.

I remember one Friends episode when the two girls ran into two male nurses. Chandler started to give them crap about it. They then replied "Well most of our experience was from desert storm (good), and we are only working as (oh 'working as?') nurses till we get through medical school." WHAT? How offensive is that...to insinuate that nursing is only good to work their way through medical school. Hopefully they heard from the Board of Nursing about that one....

I have no problem with medical staff, especially covering residents, asking for my opinion - they're right, I often do know the patient better than they do, and interpret it as an acknowlegement of this and the fact that I have more clinical experience. I also think it's a practical demonstration of the often-espoused ideal of us working as a team. Frankly, it distresses me a lot more when they're not interested in what I think.

I can relate to most of these. First year nursing student and five years of being a CNA, but mom is an LPN. I think I'm the only student walking around with hundreds of drug rep pens and have my room decked out with drug rep stuff. I love this thread! Keep it going!

When you start to dial 9 to get an outside line when you're at home.

When you're home phone rings and you answer _________ER, this is __________, How may I help you, lol.

You've ever signed your checks ___________________________, RN

How about this one-You know you're a nurse when you firmly believe (from experience) that the quickest way to stop your patient's diarrhea is to get an order for a stool sample.

Thank you! I looove friends, but that scene really irked me! Because being a male nurse isn't good enough? He has to say he's working on becoming a doctor to be taken seriously?!

Lol!

It's funny, my friend and I were just wondering if it was strange to have as many conversations about poop as we do. Naaaaah! We determined it comes with the territory!

I ALWAYS:
-assess my friends and family,
-yell "That would so not happen!" at Scrubs, ER, and Grey's Anatomy, -compliment people on their veins,
-have the best collection of pens and notepads
-bring home lancets, alcohol wipes, silk tape, and saline, but refuse to toss them -- I may need them someday!
-can tell a Pharm rep when I see one!! [Give me PENS!]

You've ever used a disposable speculum to hold a turkey open while stuffing it for Thanksgiving.
