Saturday, I was working on call for HH, driving. When I was at a pt's home, a nurse friend of mine called me and asked for a special favor. She wanted me to give her an enema. No way. She was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor, so I know that she needs help. But we were never that close. It made me creepy uncomfortable. When I told her No, she whined and said, Well, you are a nurse. I still feel like barfing. She doesn't want a friend, she wants a slave.

We had a woman with a colostomy and "short gut syndrome." After she would eat, her body would shove the food through her gut so fast, she couldnt' get nourishment, and they were trying various things to try to make her gut hold onto the food.

On the day I had her, she was eating humugous high calorie meals. About an hour later, she would put on her call light because her gut had finished "digesting" and sending out the food. She would empty her colostomy into two or three water pitchers. All I did was measure them and empty them into the toilet, but I had to fight not to gag. The colostomy contents included colorful bits of undigested food mixed with bits of soft brown, liquidy stool. The texture was that of vomit. The smell was a mixture of vomit and diarrhea.

I was truly thankful she emptied her own colostomy. I hope they figured out how to fix her as it was a horrible thing to live with.

We had an elderly (pushing 100) year old woman, who was blind, had some for of dementia and was HoH. Someone (who shall remain written in my book of shame) gave her a brown cow (prune juice, milk of mag. and fiber powder) d/t no BM prev. 5 days... it worked better than intended and she went (filling up briefs, pads, and soaking beds) in about 45 min and was going the rest of the night (5 bed changes, 7 briefs, 6 pads, and countless wet wipes and trash bags). She decided to finger paint and EAT this foamy, brown, fecal matter and paint her walls with it. It was mutually decided that one of us would stay in there at all times to make sure she didn't do it again, switching out every hour.
