- Jun 13, '08 by phriedomRNMine is horribly tame compared to some of the stories, but it certainly gave me and the rest of my unit the creeps...
I had a foley bulb induction on 4mu of pit, irregular ctx, nothing much to do with her. Triage was exploding so being the helpful coworker, I took the next patient that came up. Of couse, she's 35 weeks, c/o itching and burning *down there*
Doc comes in, pt says she spent the night at a friends house last week, and "some stuff happened" Friend just called the pt to say she was dx with crabs... So doc goes poking around with a sterile swab, pulling them off to put on a slide to show everyone. We were all itching for the rest of the night!!!!!!
- Jun 13, '08 by sbenning5[quote=Parade;2838958]I am not a nurse (yet!), but I have a rather tasty story I can share.
At the time, I was working as a Unit Clerk on Med-Surg 8P-8A. Day shift had left me in one hell of a mess, and I really was paying too much attention to my screen and not enough attention to what was going on around me. It was probably close to midnight when I noticed the pungent odor of fresh feces. Hey, it WAS Med-Surg, and I just shrugged it off as an occupational hazard.
It starts getting stronger, and my radar kicks in and a realize that it's on the move and coming towards me. I look up and I see this rather unsavory looking man limping towards me carrying a black trash bag. He walks up to my desk and tells me that he needs a nurse, and by this time, I can tell that he's not mentally sound. He absolutely reeks of feces and stagnant urine, and was covered in these open, draining wounds. I somehow manage to keep a smile on my face and I tell the man that I'll have a nurse out to see him as soon as I can. I knew my charge nurse would be back in the room in a short time, so while I'm waiting, I make the mistake of asking the man what he needs to see a nurse about.
This sick grin crosses his face and he puts this trash bag he's been carrying ON MY DESK ON TOP OF A STACK OF CHARTS and proceeds to open it and pull out his foot. No, you did not misread that. He pulled out his foot and starts waving it around. Just then, my CN comes around the corner and I'm outta there! I managed not to yark until I made it to the restroom, somehow.
After that, I think I'll be able to handle nursing school just fine.[ /quote]

I think you WIN for the most bizarre story!! Blech!Tabbyg20 likes this. - Jun 16, '08 by EkstasisQuote from Cooker93Ugh! Only one other post made me gag in this whol thread (can't remember which) and yet this one made me want to STOP READING this thread! Ugh.One of my worst times, just to think back-I also worked in Psych. We had a lady who used to "pee" in paper cups and save them on her dresser. Well, one day, we went onto her room to make sure they were disposed of and clean it up and (of course it was her monthly time) she was drinking from the paper cups!!!! I almost lost it right there. I couldn't hardly look at her for a long time without stopping myself from vomitting.

- Jun 25, '08 by alcrab01I was a CNA at the time this incident happened. I'm a critical care nurse now, and I have never been as grossed out as I was by this...
A woman in her 40's who had had a colostomy for several years following a bad MVA was admitted for an infection in her colostomy site. She came to my unit and sure enough, green pus everywhere. The site was cultured and.. guess what? She had gonorrhea in her stoma. She reluctantly admitted that she had met a man in a fetish chatroom and let him "make love" to her stoma!
Now, there is some patient teaching I would have never thought of! "By, the way, if you let someone sexually penetrate your stoma, make sure they wear a condom."Tabbyg20 likes this. - Jun 25, '08 by mom4joshQuote from alcrab01I was a CNA at the time this incident happened. EEEWWWW! Not sure I would ever even think to tell someone that. Gross!

In the confused-patient vein, here's one of my favorites: 94 YO Jenny, who had never in her life been in a hospital ("I birthed all 11 of my babies right in my own house, never seen no doctor or nothin', and every one of 'em was as healthy as I am!"). She was on the med-surg floor with CHF, and even though she was more than a little demented, she had a kind of twisted logic. There was another confused pt. in the room across from Jenny's who yelled all night long no matter what we did for him, and to say the least, this did not make Jenny very happy. We were all taking a short coffee break at around 4 AM when we heard this blood-curdling scream from the general direction of the man's room. No sooner had we run around the corner to see what was going on than we spotted Jenny, who was shuffling toward us with a half-full catheter bag........along with the entire catheter, balloon and all. "I yanked this contraption outta that feller down the hall,' she announced, handing over the apparatus before heading back down the hall to her own room. "Guess now he's got something to holler about!!"

Did he calm down after that?:chuckle

I went into a local tattoo/piercing salon recently and was talking the one of the guys that works there. He said recently there is a new thing going on in the gay community were males are having there urethra dialated (using the same method that people use to get their earlobes so huge they can put a beer can in), and having sexual intercourse thru the urethra.
To me, seeing what I seen as a nurse, anything sounds plausible, but this just seemed off the chart!
Anyone know anything?????????????
