If you've read the books it takes on a new meaning. Have to say I love that series!
It becomes and affectionate nick name but they first thought of Claire as a

Hi all, I had a look at the synopsis of the books, titled 'Cross Stitch' over here. Far too much chick lit for my tastes. From what I can gather it seems to be that this is a depiction of Scotland as accurate as Braveheart or Brigadoon.:up:

The name is disparaging and was used throughout my childhood as an insult.

An English person in Scotland could use the name as a self deprecating introduction as in, "oh I'm a sassenach".

Much as I call my wife (of 40 years) an old bat.:roflmao:

Actually, just thought of a more relevant idiom; Americans call us Limeys - can be an insult or a nickname.

Slightly off topic but I thought you might be interested in this;

Hope new TV series could be Scotland's own Game of Thrones - Fife / Local / News / The Courier

Will be shown in US next month. Hope the accents are a bit more authentic.

ps. I still will not watch it when it is shown in UK.

Ceccia is a place in Corsica (an island near France and Italy, and one of the most beautiful places in the world.). Ceccia itself is an archaeological site, so that's kind of random, but hey there are a zillion people on allnurses so this is the first username i thought of that wasn't already being used by someone else!
