Welcome to my unit

The last couple of days have been rough so please forgive me!!!!! Just some stupid things we were talking about tonight:

we were talking about one of our residents that passed away a while ago-- he looked like the Little Ceasar's pizza guy, one night he saw the commercial on tv and yelled out PIZZA PIZZA-- we were all laughing-- he was deaf...

We have a lady on our unit that goes to chemo, well on she was crying because her hair was falling out, so to make her feel better we bought her a red wig... So for halloween her family came in and she put it on to model it for them... It had devil horns attached to it!!!! Her daughter loved it she's an ER nurse...

We have races up and down the hall in the electric wheelchairs- all those showers are on the same night and someone needs to drive the chairs back down to the rooms.

We do the chicken dance at dinner

One of the ladies on our unit screams "Nurse, Nurse" all the time even when she doesn't want anything... We taught her to scream "Orderly, Orderly" and "Aide, Aide"

There are nights we swear we hear residents that have passed saying one of their key phrases....

We have happy hour after dinner, where we make crantinies and do jello shots at the med cart.

We have a lot of die hard Yankee fans on our unit-- There are red sox's stickers on my med cart and a banner at the nurses station.

I have one resident that is 95 and still goes out hunting, he sits in the back of a pick up truck with a shot gun-- never believed him until thanks giving night when he came back in full camo, with a pic of him in the back of the truck with a gun, and the giant jar of home made bambi jerky, best jerky i ever had.

we have 8 abusive residents- 2 of the worst one ane be stopped if you tell them they're handsome.

One lady used to drive us crazy asking us to shuffle her cards all the time... For x-mas she got an automatic card shuffler- now she drives day shift nuts asking for batteries

Little old ladies aren't sweet, cute and cuddly. They've taught me how to swear in polish, italian, german, and spanish...

bobby pins are priceless. so are hair spray and lotion.

I have 4 really bad sundowners- they only way they calm down is to put in one of the godfather movies

Most of our residents are addicted to WWE, TNA or UFC programs...

Whenever we order pizza, no matter what time of night, one lady gets up and comes out to take 2 slices and a pepsi and goes back to bed after.

My unit is crazy

I had a confused pt who would get increasingly agitated as the night when on. I discovered that if I announce a sing along he would be the first in front of the Nursing Station after supper. I printed our lyrics and started the singing (I have a very bad voice) he didn't care, He'd sing his heart out until bedtime after that. End of agitation!

That is so cool! Good for you for thinking outside the box on that one. He didn't need risperdal, just a fun activity. That makes me miss LTC, when you could get to know the residents and really give individualized care. I hope you put that intervention in the care plan.

My unit is crazy
haha the thing about the RED SOX is too funny. I work in Newark,NJ in a large hosp., Interventional Cardiology Unit/CCU step down. I am orig. from philly, moved up here about a year ago. I am a DIE hard Phillies and RED SOX fan, and HATE the Yankees esp. being from Philly and being a Philllies and RED SOX fan, sorry if I upset anyone. I started on my unit sept. 2007. Around the World Series time,I always would wear my red sox t-shirts under my uniform, and still do. HAHA I can;t tell you how many of my pt's had runs of v-tach and a MAJOR increase in BP when I told them I was a RED SOX and Phillies fan and I was also from Philly, most of the pt's would say I don't believe you, Dundunannnahhh, I would show them my SOX shirt, needless to say when ever those pt's are readmitted to my floor they ask for me...hahaha
