Specializes in Med nurse in med-surg., float, HH, and PDN.
i just find it odd that the word "grossest" was in there. and the fact that this poster never came back to clear them self up. Had they come back to re-word things i would have not said anything about it.

So i'm fine with sharing stories of stupid things we've seen teenage boys do. heck, i've seen it. So i understand. but its the fact they asked for us to share stories and never came back to "clear their name"

The OP's 'name' was Mtb97.....Could stand for 'Mischevious teenage boy' , and 9+7=16 !!!!!! So, there ya go!

Or maybe born in '97 and is now fourteen?

Or maybe born in '97 and is now fourteen?

Or make it less complicated...maybe he is 97?

Or born in 1897 and he is now 114. A teenager for the second time around. :D

Just going to throw this in the ring here - When i had my peds rotation teenage male patients were my biggest fear. I was worried I wouldn't relate to them, or be able to speak to them or gain their trust. Of course my instructor must have sensed this because my first two assignments were 14 and 15 yo boys!

Do you think it could be a student fearing this maligned age group?

(by the way, i really enjoyed caring for them, and all my fears were unfounded.

I only remember 2 teen-age boys (there must have been others, but I spent most of my career in OB). The first was a 16-year-old type I diabetic. We were to get a blood sugar when he was having a reaction. He was so afraid of reactions that he never let us know until after he'd eaten something. I don't know how they worked that one out (I was floating).

The second was another float experience--also 16, a drug user with abcesses. He was truly obnoxious (he worked at it). No one could do is dressings "right".

Neither was gross or even funny--weird, maybe. I'm sure I only remember them because they were outside my usual experience.

Specializes in Not specified.

I dont know about teenagers, but I accidentally walked into a 70 yo male patient masterbating. I said I would come back. Hey, if you are masterbating in a hospital, it is probably a good sign and an indicator that you are well enough to go home.

Wow ... calling teenaged boys "gross" is creepy now?

Does the word "gross" mean something different in the USA?

Cos here it means grotty, disgusting ... not necessarily "dirty" in the sexual sense.

And as a mum of a 13 (nearly 14) year old and 12 year old boy, teenaged boys are gross. They fart LOUDLY as often as they can, to the point they squeeze it out. They need threatening with dire consequences to shower on a regular basis. One of them would dive headfirst into a pile of mud given half a chance. Their bathroom, despite regular cleaning, smells like a port-a-loo and has more puddles than a pot holed street on a rainy day.

I''ve seen teenaged boys pick their noses and wipe the offerings on the underside of the nightengale trays.

I've seen them use a "bottle" to pee in then stash it under their beds and not use the call light to tell the nurse there is a bottle there to empty.

I've seen 'skid marked' undies to rival a babies nappy.

I've seen them refuse to brush their teeth to the point their teeth are yellow and disgusting.

All these things I would describe as gross. Not something worth perving at.

Haha no Kiwi, gross doesn't mean something different in the usa. I'm American and I was also wondering what was so creepy and offensive about the word.

probably the OP just had a crazy experience with a teenage male, and may possibly be a new grad and was wondering if any had had any similar experiences, or perhaps was looking for an opening to tell her story...... totally innocent, i would presume...............

As a mom of two teenage boys I would have to disagree...

sure some are gross however the same can be applied to girls...

IMHO I think it depends on the person...I know mine are like day and night compared to each other however that said both are great and well mannered!

I was told by a teenage girl that their cabin was way worse than the boys cabin was while at a camp recently!!

Gosh even comparing my husband and I, I would have to admit I am the one who is very unorganized where as he is very anal when it comes to having everything in order...:o
