Physicians v. Gun Owners

by TiffyRN

Subject: Physicians v. Gun Owners

Physicians:

a. The number of physicians in the U.S .is 700,000.

b. Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.

c. Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171. (Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept. of HHS)

Guns:

a. The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000.

b. The number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) is 1,500.

c. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.000188.

Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, "Guns don't kill people, doctors do."

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand. Out of concern for the public at large, I have withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention

It is funny, but you'll notice it ignores INTENTIONAL deaths caused by firearms.

I beg to differ. Guns prevent an estimated 2.5million crimes a year, or 6,849 every day. (Targeting Guns by Dr. Gary Kleck, Criminologist, Florida State University, 1997). Often the gun is never fired and no blood (including the criminal's) is shed. Every day, 550 rapes, 1,100 murders, and 5,200 other violent crimes are prevented just by showing a gun. In less than 0.9% of the time is the gun ever actually fired. (James Wright and Peter Rossi "Armed and Considered Dangerous: A Survey of Felons and Their Firearms" New York: Aldine, 1986) So I believe the number of lives saved by guns each year is quite a bit more than a few.

I thought it was funny, too, and read it as a very funny joke. I'm just very into self-protection and the Second Amendment and felt I needed to clear up what was said about guns not saving lives. Maybe we should just let it be what it started as.....a funny joke.
