My "Duh" moment in my first day of nursing school clinical

by RaeT,RN

Well, you guys know you just wanna puke the first day of clinical. I was lucky enough (note sarcasm) to have Nurse Ratchet for my sub-assigned nurse that day. (An unfortunately unhappy person who takes it out on everyone else). I asked her if she needed any help, and she told me to go get ice for her pts in the "white bags". I asked the CNA where I could find them and she showed me and I filled them up. I brought them back out to my nurse and she snapped at me, "That's not what I asked you for. The WHITE bags." Guys, these bags sure as anything were white because I had gotten her ICE PACKS for all her pts rather than ice bags for the pts' ice pitchers! What she should've asked me for were the CLEAR bags of ice . . . but anyways. I cried that day, but I can laugh about it now!

I'm not laughing at you, but with you!

What you described could be the nurse's "duh" moment just as easily as it was yours! Thank you for your great attitude! Good luck to you!

It sounds like the nurse was blaming you for her not being specific enough. Can't stand people like that.

Sounds like the nurse didn't specify what she wanted the ice bags for - which would have cleared the problem up right then and there. I wish preceptors didn't automatically assume that students know certain things - there's no way to read someone's mind, duh!
