The other night right after i clocked in for my shift, i go to answer a call light to a room that i knew had a pt. that was a post-op hysterectomy. I open the door to find her sitting up in bed saying "yes, i know i have this catheter in but i REALLY HAVE TO PEE". The Foley bag didn't quite contain 100cc, though. Since the dr.'s orders stated that on her 3rd day that she could walk with assistance, i asked if she wanted to stand and see if the gravity might help her "pee".

It did. I watched at it took one minute to fill the bag with 1300 cc's of urine. No wonder she felt the need to go!

Our patient profiles on our computer program includes the pt.'s occupation if they so desired to list it. As i enter in her output amount, i noticed this pt.'s occupation line said "14 yr. registered nurse, 3 yr. nursing manager".

That explains the super bladder.

Couldn't walk until the 3rd day??? Did she have more going on than just a hyst? I used to work in Women's Surgery and have had a hyst myself and have never heard that one.

Yes, sometimes those foleys get kinks in them or the opening of the tubing in the bladder finds itself against the bladder wall and will cause a backup. During my first assessment with every patient with a foley, I always play with the tubing to make sure it's draining. Sometimes, just a little movement of the tubing will get it flowing again.

If i remember correctly (since this was back in August), she was at risk for bleeding due to an existing condition.
