Funny Or Horror

  1. When I first started in my present job as a lpn with 1 yr of service under my belt and my first time male catherterization I thought this should be so simple. armed with my RN supervisor at my side and my supples I was instructed to cathterize a male resident. This seemed so easy, little did I know that this male resident had a prostate problem. The catherterization went so smoothly until the resident started to bleed profusciously. OMG! What do I do, well all I could think of was the first aid technique to stop the bleeding... so what did i do but think of balling this mans penis up in my hands to help stem the flow of blood, I was mortified, of course this caused a rukus of laughter with the telling , and the bleeding did stop, but OMG! what a sight it was to see me trying to stem the flow of blood by balling up this resident's penis and balls to stop the bleeding.. what a moron.

This can't be as bad as the foleys I've seen pulled out WITH THE BALLOON STILL INFLATED!! Of course, most of these guys were drunk out of their gourds, but still!!

    .............The horror................the...horror.............

    Wow, that's a stress test!!

Well, what is the proper procedure in that case?

It's not like you can apply pressure to the hemorraghic prostate..........well, actually there is but I imagine you would need something on the other side of it like a full bladder to push against.

    Let it run its course?

I may indeed be in that situation some day.........on either side of the catheter, although I doubt that as the patient I would be conciouse at that point in order to offer anything more than grunting and panting with an ocassional expletive.

The only way to know where the bleeding is coming is through cystoscopy. The catheter could have caused trauma to the urethra, prostate or bladder. Another possibility is a false passage could have been created with catheter insertion.
Treatment urologist's use to stop the excessive bleeding is insertion of a larger size catheter.
