Common nicknames for hospital items.

Just wanted to see if the nicknames we call certain items are the same names you guys call them lol. I work in the midwestern region.

Examples include:

1.) "Bubblier" for humidifier

2.) "Ice pack" for the polar pack and the original ice pack

3.) "Patches" for tele electrodes

4.) "Stickers" for labels

5.) "Booties" for spenco boots

6.) "Christmas tree" for O2 connector

That is all I can think of at the moment. Feel free to add to the list. I am looking forward to seeing new nicknames I haven't heard before :)

My professor told a story about when she was talking to a student in clinicals at the nurses station. She asked the student: "Is that COW still in room 2A?" This was just as the student's patient from 2A, a rather obese woman, walked by.

Needless to say, my prof saw the woman's face and immediately said to the student: "By COW, do you understand I'm referring to the computer-on-wheels?"

Where I've worked, we call the plastic urine collector that fits in the toilet, a "nun's cap". Never have figured out why, but everyone knows what we're referring to!

We called them texas hats......however....this is why it's callled a nuns cap

I had never heard of a condom catheter called a Texas catheter before except for one nurse that used that term - not sure if its a funny or not...

the new hospital I just started working at calls their SCD's Flowtrons...

We had to switch from COWs to WOWs (wireless on wheels) when we started doing bariatrics. If overheard by a bariatric patient, it could seem insensitive.

In the OR, when doing laparoscopic surgery, we use two monitors. The outlet monitor was called a "slave". They banned that term, and it's now called a "satellite". PC non-sense. I'm black, and I could care less. It's not like a black person has to hold the screen during the entire surgery, NOW that would be a "slave", lol.
