Don't feel bad! It happens to EVERYONE! Unfortunately, any site that has java applet movies or cartoons on it, or even games, or any web site that runs midi files or music on it has the potential to pass a virus on to you. In fact every single web site you go to, your computer has to load that information up in order for you to view it. This way, viruses are easily passed on from sites that are not properly protected or regulated (i.e, the larger, corporate or government sites, or those from a reputable company or corporation).
I have picked up viruses before from clicking on links that were posted here (to sites that had jokes or funny pictures, games, or animations that others had posted), but I could never be absolutely SURE where I had gotten them. Until recently, that is.
Just the other day, I had run a virus scan and found nothing, and then I came here second when logged on and clicked on a link someone had posted here to an animated joke. I clicked on it twice, to watch it twice, and almost immediately I was having issues with my computer. I ran another virus scan and found TWO viruses that had not been there previously. Now, the only other place I went to was Yahoo! for email checking, and it's entirely possible that I got something from Yahoo! (not from email; I don't open attachements), so I can't say for sure that it was from here. However, it was SO COINCIDENTAL that that occurred that I can say that I am *fairly certain* of where I picked it up, which led to my decision just to not click on the stuff when it's posted.
Not your fault! We have no way of knowing what's embedded within those sites or animations, really. You just take a chance.
