Being a nursing student

Updated Nov 24, 2007 at 11:44 PM by rannRN

This story is not about me...this happened during one of our exams. Here goes:

- A proctor asked a student where to find the PMI (point of maximum impulse) using his stethoscope...
guess where the student placed it? On his forehead!!!

- A student is to perform Catheterization on a female, he was giving the woman instructions before he would start the procedure, and this is what he said, "Gud morning ma'am, I will we your nursing student for today, before I start my procedure could you please urinate in the CR first"

- One time we were having a return demonstration about BP (blood pressure) taking, the student - after doing the procedure and felt it was right - told the professor that the BP was 120/80 mmhg. The professor asked "Are you sure?" the student replied "Yes sir, absolutely sure"... the professor then said, "Ok very well, but please put the earpiece of your stethoscope in your ears." hahahahaha

I forgot the others but when I do get to remember them i will surely post it...if you have other student memories kindly pls share it too

I have a funny. This wasn't me but one of my classmates. We were on the clinical floor our first semester and she was assigned an isolated patient. Before going into the room, she was told to gown and glove up. Well, she put on a patient gown instead of an isolation gown and went into the patient's room. It wasn't her fault that our clinical instructor didn't specify which gown to put on.

In nursing school we were told to give a shot kinda like a dart, quick not slow. Well a student took the instructions above and beyond and stood about a foot away from the pt and threw the needle like a dart. Seriously.

Where I'm from, we call this 'bombing'. Though it's not encouraging to hear it's being done in clinicals.. I've done it a few times in my general ed classes. The idea is, if you haven't the foggiest idea what the answer is, do something funny, because you're not gonna get it right anyway.

Just yesterday, in chem, the girl next to me labelled three functional groups of carbohydrates as hydroxyl, ketone and rockin'

wow, she actually threw the needle like a dart? OMG. I've nevr done needles before, but I would NEVER do that; you need to be quick when giving an inj, but I would never take the "throwing like a dart" thing to heart. LOL! I hope she was stopped before she did some damage to the pt. Did anyone stop her? I hope the pt's okay.

The needle actually bounced off of the pt and thank god he was a very nice man. He laughed at the whole thing. During second year I had ended up with the same guy and when I had to give him a shot, he started cracking up, told me the story (I already knew about, had a big lecture about not throwing needles at pts) He still said it was his best day ever in the hospital. lol

Wow...if that ever happened here I'm pretty sure the whole batch would be listening to that student do a lecture about what she did...naks!!!
