What digital recorder and other gear should I get?

Hello all,
This is my first post, and I had a question. I am currently in the pre-nursing program in my school, and will be applying for the nursing program at the end of this semester (A&P II and a math class to go). Anyways, my parents let me know that for my birthday and Christmas they want to get me some of the supplies I will need for nursing, and I was hoping for some advice.

I know that a digital recorder would be useful, but I do not know what is a good one. I also know that I need a good stethoscope, however I do not know what else I should ask for. Any suggestions, or advice would be greatly appreciated.
