Decent tape recorder for report *where to buy*

In our SNF, we use taped report almost exclusively. We've had some trouble in the past with finding a decent tape recorder that will last more than a couple weeks We prefer the desktop models, but have been using a handheld (battery-powered) version for the past couple months. It goes through batteries quite quickly and the AC cord never did work right. We have tried an RCA version without success THREE times! Same model, same problem. Records great, playback sounds like the Chipmunks.

Any suggestions on a model and seller?

Must be tape?

MP3 recorder with replaceable/rechargeable batteries. Unsexy. About as attractive for theft as a tape recorder. I have most all my college lectures (when permitted) archived from this source on DVD. I set the thing in full view as required on my desk. The size of my thumb. Picks up everything in the room. For playback plugs into speakers or into headphones for privacy.

Archiveable, seekable, CRC as anti-tampering i.e. erasure/re-recording is detectable/recoverable, compressed, portable, device independent. Avoids the Rose Mary Woods defense.

Sansa m200 series. 30 hours on Alkaline. 20 hours on re-chargeable. Big difference in power consumption between motor driven tape and MP3 recording.
