Where are new grads being hired right now?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I would like to get an idea of whats happening with new grads across the country. Where are new grads actually being hired? What are the stats on the new grad programs (how many apply for how many postions, etc.) Please share what you know about your state/region on the new grad outlook.

Someone early asked about Philadelphia. Same here. lots of jobs but want 1-3 years experience. ADN nurses end up in LTC and home care, BSN some can get hospitals if they have experience in the hospital or know someone.

So It appears to me the difficult NewGrad situation is getting progressively worst as time goes by. This is disturbing to me because there is a reality gap here that no one is addressing. One a side NewGrads are struggling with unimaginable hardship and on the other students flock to nursing schools at the sweet melody of "The endless nursing shortage tune". This stark contrast which involves so much suffering and hardship for new nurses and a stable and healthy school enrollment for nursing students just doesn't make sense. At the end of the day schools are living a good life on federal and private loans and students foot the bill without getting anything in return other then spend time and money looking for jobs that aren't there and updating their licences. Why is this "nursing shortage" fable lasting so long. We've been into this since 2008 so we're going into the 5th year with no end in sight. I understand times are hard and nursing is not the only job market that is affected and no one can predict the future or control the course of the economy. I don't think is fair for a group of people to benefit from other's misfortunes. Nursing schools should expose the reality of the job market for new grads but they don't appear to be doing that since at least to my knowledge nursing schools enrollment have not gone down. I hear of people still waiting 3 years to get placement. If nursing is in such short demand in 2012 why we still produce nurses as if it was 2007? If the nursing shortage is real then why we are not getting any jobs? Hospitals are making record profits so why aren't more nurses being trained?

Why is Stanford using travel nurses if they have so many applicants>>> Are these replacement workers for a looming strike>??? I am responding to vwgirll2's post

Omaha, Nebraska. Graduated in Decemeber and got a job at a large hospital in Oncology fairly quickly. In my orientation class there were three new grads from Co... I guess the job market for new grads is better in Nebraska.

Looking at border towns is EXCELLENT advice! I would also look into areas where the oil industry is booming (South and West Texas, North Dakota...). I graduated in August, moved out of state to San Antonio and STRUGGLED to find a job. On a whim I started applying to small border towns here in Texas and BAM! Got a job in the field I WANT to work in, and I had my pick of those areas. (I was offered Peds, ER, and NICU.) Yeah- no one who lives in the city wants to move to a smaller border town, but you can do ANYTHING for a year or two so you can get your feet wet. Heck- I have a family in San Antonio but am willing to live down here three nights a week so I can get experience and get a job up where I want to be. :D

hi kristeyk, i do not live in tx but i am willing to relocate! any suggestions on specific hospitals to apply to? feel free to pm me. i appreciate any advice!

I work at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in the PICU and there is rolling admissions for new graduates. I was hired with 3 other new grads just for their december '12 cohort. Since summer of last year, there've been 30 new grads hired hospital wide (in ER, PICU, NICU to name a few units).

The 30 of us meet in a nurse residency class every 6 weeks to support and learn from one another. We will "graduate" together at the end of 18 months together. We take supplemental classes, get certifications for things like PALS, and are lectured by experts in different specialties within the hospital (ex: social work, resp therapy, MD residents, etc). It's a great program for new grads and I'd highly recommend you apply! I moved from California for this job... CHOP is #1 ranked children's hospital in the US!

Did you work there as an extern? CHOP was at a job fair I attended and their HR rep said it was almost impossible to get in there as a new grad unless you worked there previously.

I did not work as an extern. I was living in San Francisco when I applied and I flew out for the interview. So it is possible to get hired externally!

I live in NE Pennsylvania and there are several hospital systems here that are willing to hire new grads - as long as you want to do med surge...in fact most of the new grads from Philly come up here, get their year or two in and then go back....

in my class of 43 more than 50% of us have been offered jobs...and the other 50% is waiting till after boards to apply...

@Twinmom06, Which hospital systems will take new grads? I've been applying in NE PA and haven't gotten any hits. I've only gotten hits in central and western PA. I live in CA right now but will relocate (I have a PA license too). My family is in NE PA.
