Phone interview!

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I had an unexpected phone interview today! She just called and asked if I had a moment and of course I said yes. I wasn't prepared an not sure I did well. One of the questions was "anything else you'd like the manager to know about you?" I kinda froze up! I said I was willing to learn and grow from other nurses with more experience and that I was hard working an dependable also willing to work any shift. Oh and also said that with my two years of LPN exp I wasn't the typical new grad so I had more to bring to they able.

Here is how mine went:

NM: hi, is this **********

Me: yes

NM: I'm calling from ********* hospital

Me: ok?

NM: you applied for an L&D position here correct?

Me: oh yes I did, hello!

NM: so, why do you want to work l&d

Me: ummmm it's a happy place. (In my mind I'm thinking OMG you fool! Say something! Save yourself!)

NM: ok. Why don't you tell me about yourself?

Me: I have X years military experience, I have ACLS, PALS and BLS; and I have two kids so I have experience (thinking oh you are an IDIOT!!!!!)

NM: why don't we have a face to face interview?

Me: that sounds great! (Thinking holy cow, how can I screw this up MORE?!?!?!?)

In the end, I got the job! :) LMAO still not sure how!

Lesson to learn and I learned the hard way. I have a new nurse advice book and I didn't read it until AFTER my phone interview. Top tip: ALWAYS reschedule the phone interview. I made a total fool out of myself because like you I had no clue what to say.

What book was that? I'd love to get a book like that!!!

I have two and I'm not entirely sure which the idea came from. I have "stressed out about your first year of nursing" and "your first year as a nurse". Hmmm now that I think about it I may have heard it in a lecture I will add the link: it's a must see! The books were great though I suggest you get them anyway. Helped me with my cover letter and how to approach everything. Those books along with the lecture I feel helped me land my job.

It can be a bit dull but GREAT tips. Good luck :)

I had my first phone interview a few days ago. I am very unexperienced with interviews in general, not because of being a new nurse, but because i had been at the same job, before this, for 24 years! It was with the recruiter, and after a few general nursing questions, she asked me those same 'hard, thought provoking' questions. I did what you all said....gave myself a pause here and there, to think. I even told her about this being my first interview in 24 yrs, and told her how, back then, they asked 'so, you want the job.....can you work this shift...ok when can you start'. She laughed....and we talked for almost an hour ! Then she said she was giving my info to the manager, and if shes interested, they'll call next week for a face to face. She told me my answers were exactly the kind of answers she was looking for, and i did a good job! So......now I wait, and hope for that 'face to face' call next week. ill keep you posted.

Wish I had thought of that when I was a new grad...I botched more than my share of phone interview because I wasn't quite ready.
