New Grad, New to SoCal

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I moved to Chino Hills, CA in April and have been job hunting ever since. With a family of 4, I am getting desperate. I have attended RN blitz's (and waited for up to six hours and not even gotten an interview) and applied to twelve different hospitals for countless positions. I will be applying to a new grad program at Loma Linda Hospital next week. Any advice on how to get in to this program? Any advice at all on anything else? Should I check out Craig's List positions?

Southern California's new grad RN job market has been oversaturated with more nurses than can be absorbed since late 2008 to early 2009. It is normal to have several thousand candidates apply to each new grad program when only a few slots are available.

I definitely would look into CraigsList opportunities if I were you. Also look into non-hospital settings such as private duty, home health, hospice, SNF, nursing homes, group homes, the county jail, the California Dept of Corrections, and so forth.

Good luck to you.

Good luck! I've heard the unemployment rate for new grads in CA is almost 50% :(

From what I've read on AN the job market for new grads in CA is challenging to say the least. Wish I could help, but the best I can offer is a sincere good luck in your search!

p.s. if your user name is actually your real name, you may want to consider changing that.

Craigslist can be shady, try indeed.com it's a little more reputable. Good luck.

South Cal is one of the worst places for new grads...as per CNN report over 47% of new grads are unemployed over a year after graduation/NCLEX. Craigslist can be a good place for jobs...however make sure you apply to jobs with a clear fax and email address...do not apply to anonymous email addresses (as in those with @craigslist.org at the end of the email address). You can always email and ask them for a non-anonymous email address as you don't feel comfortable sending your personal info/resume to an unknown email address. Indeed.com is a good site for jobs. And you can try to email HR and managers , find their emails via googling them.

It's horrible here. I applied to over 300 places and had 2 interviews. It's not that I had a bad resume. It's just that they have an overwhelming number of applicants. Try other places as suggested by other posters. Home health, snf, ltc, weight loss clinics, dialysis centers.
