Jobs outside of hospitals besides nursing home/LTAC/home health?

Nurses Job Hunt

So, like every other new grad out there, I'm not having much luck landing my first job. I have my ADN and I'm about half way done with my BSN. I'm a great student, participated in our student nurse organization, and I volunteer, so I would think I'd seem like a pretty good candidate, but I live in Austin, TX, which seems to have a particularly competitive job market. At first I applied for the coveted nurse residency positions, and even had a few promising interviews, but no luck. Rather than continuing such a discouraging and frustrating experience, I figured I might do better looking off the beaten path a bit.

I know there are Nursing Jobs out there besides in hospitals and nursing homes, but I have no idea how to find them. Any time I try doing a search on something like Indeed or Monster, I get flooded with hospital positions and positions affiliated with the hospitals that are equally disinterested in new grads. I even tried joining ASRN after reading about their save the grads program, only to find that their job board's entry level button is apparently just for decoration, and found myself still sifting through dozens of positions requiring a year or more experience.

I'm not trying to be picky with the whole, no nursing homes, LTACs or home health. I just know from past clinical experience that I find nursing homes and LTACs incredibly depressing, and the idea of home health as a brand new nurse makes me very nervous. I really don't want to hate my first nursing job, because I'm afraid that after the normal trying experience of nursing school, and now even worse, this job hunt, if I have a bad experience with the job I do finally land, that I won't be able to find a reason to push myself to go back to nursing.

So, TL;DR, do any of you have advice on where to look and how to find the less well advertised jobs that may be out there?

If you have any interest in public health, check out the listings on the Health District(s) in your area. Sometimes jobs are not posted as publicly (such as on Monster, Indeed). Check out the individual websites of local clinics, outpatient/surgery centers, dialysis centers, blood banks, Urgent Care, whatever you are interested in. As always, if you know any nurses, ask around. Good luck!

I just got hired as a nurse reviewer in an insurance company.. And that position can be filled by new graduates... Great pay and benefits!
