Does ANY RN work experience count???

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello,

After graduating and passing my NCLEX-RN,

I was fortunate enough to land an RN job within 3 months. However it wasn't in an acute setting which I would have preferred - it is in a doctor's private dermatology practice. It mainly entails operating various cosmetic lasers. But it pays the bills!

My main question is this: even though this isn't acute care, does this RN work experience count? In other words, after I have been working at the Derm office for a year, will I have a better chance of landing my "dream" job in a hospital setting? Or will it not count in the eyes of hiring managers?

It counts as RN experience, sure, but as it's not acute care experience, it won't give you a leg up on hospital jobs.
