Difference between City Hospital and Community Health RN Job.

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hi Everyone,

I really need help in deciding about my job. I recently graduated and obtained my RN License. I have been offered two jobs. One at Bellevue Hospital and one as Community Health Registered Nurse.

I am really confused which one to pick as I find both the jobs very good for new graduate. Community Health Nurse pays slightly more than City Hospital with all benefits. I know the stress level is higher at the hospital but at the same time I feel the job would be more secured at the hospital. I would love to hear any suggestion or advice to help me decide on this decision.

Thank You very much.

Bellevue is a renowned hospital with an incredibly rich history. I think it would be an honor to work there.

Specializes in Public Health, L&D, NICU.

I worked in many hospitals over a 15 year period. Large regional facilities, religious institutions, small community hospitals. I finished up in a regional public hospital. A year or so ago, I switched to public health, and it is so much better. I really loved bedside nursing. But you aren't just allowed to nurse. There's so much more, well, crap now that's added to it. I don't know what staffing levels are like at Bellevue, but at most hospitals staffing is getting increasingly tight, with no improvement on the horizon. I hated working the hospital so bad that I would get physically ill on the way to work. My community job is less stressful. I get to connect with people, I really feel like I'm helping them. There are frustrations, of course, there are any time you deal with people. Getting out of the hospital was the best thing I ever did. I don't think I could have done this job as a new grad, though. There's too many times I'm expected to know an answer immediately, and most of those answers come from my years in the hospital.

Your skill level would probably benefit from being in a hospital. It is a well-respected institution, perhaps they haven't succumbed to the dumbing down of healthcare in pursuit of good Press-Ganey scores.

Is the money at Bellevue and the community health job comparable?

I feel like it'll be easier to work anywhere you want after working at Bellevue. Working in community health as your first RN job might pigeonhole you, no? (But congrats, both sound great!)

Thank You very much for all your responses. It is really helpful. The pay is slightly more at community health job.

If you don't mind what company did you get the community health nursing position with? I had an interview at one and they are taking so long to get back to me. And what do you think is a reasonable pay for a community health nurse in NYC.

The company that I got in was Home Health Agency. I spoke to some of my friends who works in similar kind of company and they offer $40 and above per hour.

Does anyone know the time period between Interview-HR Calling you- Orientation at Bellevue? I have heard it takes very long. Is that true?

Thank You monkey bug. It is extremely to get your feedback. I was slightly scared about the stress level at the hospital. I heard Community Health Nurse is not very stressful. At the same time, I didn't want to lose the opportunity to get the experience in the hospital.

Thank You Bloodorange. I am sure you're right about that. I heard its much easier to get community health nurse job after getting experience from the hospital.
