5 Months and no job

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I'm a new grad lpn for about 5 months and still no job any advice? I have a family to support and can't do it, I'm lost right now. Thanksgiving is coming up and I can't put food on the table at this point going to have apply at fast joint or something because I have no income coming in. And it's taking a toll on my marriage. What to do

Honestly? Have your spouse read all the "I don't have a job" posts. You aren't alone. He/she needs to see how tight things are. The medical field isn't the recession proof place it was 10 years ago.

Exactly! I showed my husband some of these threads, but for different reasons. I had interviews and job offers but they were between either driving over an hour to work, us moving so I didn't have to drive, or me working at night. He said he didn't want to move....it was too far to drive...and I shouldn't work at night. I said, "Look, there are people who graduated a YEAR ago and don't have a job at all so I'm lucky to have all the options that I have!" After considering how much I'll be making and what the other option is (unemployed) he came around!

No idea where you are located but here is a very well paying LPN job posting. Starting pay $3,878/month. Not for everybody:

Vacancy Search (VPOS) - State Personnel Board - spb.ca.gov

5 months is NOTHING. In CA, there are still new grads 2-3 years post-graduation without a job.

I do not know where you are applying, but broaden your search. Apply to hospital and non-hospital jobs. Broaden your search distance-wise as well.

Good luck! Hope you land a job soon!

2-3 years post-grad and can't get a job? Wow, they don't even remotely come close to giving you a heads up in Nursing school. I'm in NY and its also tough here but a lot of my fellow classmates have gotten jobs via perseverance and networking. Ask your clinical instructors or professors, not only can they write you a letter of recommendation but they also can refer you to their former colleagues and hospitals. Try to keep a positive outlook and tell yourself that this is what you want to do.

All I can say is keep trying. There is bound to be a break in there somewhere. Try public and private schools, psych hospitals, try applying to health departments in your area, if there are any technical schools around you, sometimes you can get a job teaching CNA courses. Just keep trying. I graduated back in May (6 months now), and it took me that long to find something. I accepted my first position, and now people keep calling that I put in resumes with MONTHS ago! Just keep trying, keep your head up. It WILL happen.

Specializes in OB/GYN/Neonatal/Office/Geriatric.
Go in person and apply to every Health and Rehab Center in your area. Then follow up with the DON. I got a prn job at first but this is how I got my new full time job. Good Luck!

She is correct. Don't turn down PRN work because many times it leads to full time work. Be professional, energetic and have a really great resume. Good luck!

If you practice outside of the nursing requirement you will be liable and it's considered misconduct. You are better doing non patient related work.

I'm a lpn and thanks for the post. It's crazy because I want to back to school but can't afford to right now. Does it really make sense anyway? If new grads can't get jobs fresh out of school!

I am a cna I have been for 8 years and I tried that but they won't let me work as one because I'm a lpn
