Question for Nurse Educators: Did you know...

Specialties Educators

Published

that you wanted to go into nursing education prior to starting nursing school? i know that for myself, i love the college school setting as well as working with students. i feel that as a nursing educator i can do more for patients by preparing students to become good nurses. the fact that the hours are long, there is a lot of prep and homework to do and the salaries are usually less than what one can make on the floor, doesn't bother me in the least.

i would love to hear from experienced nurse educators..especially you vickie rn.

I thought I wanted to be a faculty member when I was a student. After getting my MSN, I gave it a try and had a not-so-great experience. So, I went back to being a CNS and Staff Development instructor. After getting my PhD, I gave undergraduate teaching another try at another school and had a terrible experience. So, I went back to the hospital setting once again.

It was never the students that were the problem, it was the politics of the schools and how they were so poorly run. In spite of my PhD focusing on philosophy, theory, and research methodology, I am a very practical person who "likes the trains to run on time" so-to-speak. The organizational idiocy and the contentious interpersonal relationships within the schools in which I taught was just too frustrating for me.

I also prefer the higher pay, more respect, and more flexible work schedule that the hospital environment allows. I also prefer teaching experienced nurses who are more like graduate students than undergraduates.
