Hi,

Is anyone here an instructor for an online education program? Is there a clinical aspect to your program that you oversee? If so, how does that work with your license if you are teaching students in other states.

Thanks!

I teach online ... but there is no clinical component to my classes.

In my hospital job, we work with students who are taking online classes with clinical components. The student must have an on-site preceptor who supervises their actual clinical care. The faculty member just oversees the whole course, grades written assignments, etc. The faculty member is not present in the clinical site and is not engaged in patient care in any way -- therefore, does not need an in-state license.

We also require an affiliation agreement between the hospital and the school. In addition to other issues, the agreement states that hospital personnel will supervise the student's clinical practice -- not the faculty.

Thank you! I appreciate your response. That is very helpful.

I am a graduate-level faculty on a 100% online university. There is no clinical component to the MSNs we offer (education, leadership/ management and {soon} informatics) however, we are required to be licensed in our home state, TN and WA. The Boards in these states have this requirement. Not sure why- it's a whole lotta hoops to jump through!
