Nurse Educators, Introduce Yourselves!

Welcome to the Nurse Educator Forum. It is my desire that you find this a warm, inviting place and will come here often for friendly, collegial discussions.

Let me introduce myself: I have been an ADN nurse educator in a small community college in North Carolina for the past two years. My areas of specialty are medical-surgical, OBGYN and immediate newborn, and cardiac nursing. In addition to teaching, I conduct clinicals on general medical-surgical, PEDS, postpartum, and cardiac step-down units. Along with being a full time nursing instructor, I am working on my Masters in Nursing Education. I am enrolled in a fully online curricula and have been very satisfied with this so far.

I have learned much these past two years but, I have so much more to learn! I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello everyone!

I've been meaning to post for a while now!!! I decided that this is a job that the "work" never ends...and that I would take some time just to "relax" today and finally introduce myself.

I'm Melanie....new full time faculty teaching my passion- pediatrics!!!- in Rhode Island. I've taught "adjunct" before in San Diego, Boise, and at another school here in RI. I've been a pedi RN for 13 years (acute care and community) and a pedi nurse practitioner for 5 years (primary care, child abuse, development center).

I'm enjoying it...but it's a high learning curve teaching full time! Classroom management, creating good exams and assignments, coordinating clinicals as well as teaching a clinical group..etc.

I enjoyed reading the tips. I'm getting more confident in front of the classroom (do have a fear of public speaking...or at least I did!!!). I had to develop all my lecture from scratch...which it hasn't been too bad, but I'm always only "one lecture ahead"....and I love exam days where I don't have to talk!!!!

I'll be making it a point to visit this forum frequently. The dept. chair is great...and the rest of the faculty are helpful. I definitely am the New One in the group and I feel it...especially when I go to curriculum committee meetings, etc.

I'd love to get to know all of you!!! Melanie:rotfl:

Hi there! I'm Lisa and I was just hired as the new Maternal/Child nursing instructor at a community college in Illinois. I've been a nurse for 6 years and most of my experience has been in pediatrics (kidney and liver transplant, GI and urology). I started out with an ADN, then went on to an accelerated BSN/MSN program. Right before graduation, I was hired as adjunct faculty teaching peds clinicals. I did that for just over a year (while working my other job) and then the faculty at the college convinced me to apply for a full time position after I graduated. So now here I am! And loving every minute of it!

I'm a young teacher (30) and get teased quite a bit by the older faculty, but it's all good-natured. I have a wonderful support system at the college and am very proud to say that I am a nursing instructor. :p I sound very optimistic, bright eyed and bushy tailed, don't I?

Nice to "meet" everyone!

hi lisa. you sound a lot like me. i'm 30 (will be 32 when i start teaching), and have mostly peds experience too. as for the teasing, i kind of get it too, from my classmates. they love to point out things that happened before i was born, but don't like to hear how old i was in 1975, 1980, etc. they're just jealous!!! :chuckle i do, however enjoy being with the more 'mature' crowd in school. i wouldn't get that if i was in the np program :chuckle

I am a nurse for over 30 years, and have been teaching nursing for about 15 years. I teach fundamentals, introduction to pharmacology, med-surg nursing and clinical, all for the first semester student. I am about to begin to teaching online, and would love to have any resources that someone might want to share. Please feel free to email me.

Specializes in Med-Surg, , Home health, Education.

I'm a nurse educator in our small hospital. I have been a nurse for 25 years. I don't work with students, just the staff in the hospital. I set up and teach inservices and work on remedial education. As for bonemarrowrn's question regarding OB. Just remember that an RN will be assigned to each of the patients and will be a great resource in that specialized area. We can't be "experts" in all of the areas but knowing our best resources will be a big help. Glad to find some more educators.

Hello everyone. I am the Clinical Educator at my facility. I just started this position as of 9/1/04. For the first time in my life, I have finally stopped going to school. I graduated in July, 04 getting my MSN in education--so working in education fills the void of not attending classes (Hurray!). I love learning and I love teaching. I have been a nurse for 10 years--half of those years, I worked as House Supervisor. I have worked most units but obtained my board certification in Med-Surg. Med-Surg is never a dull place. Next year, I can sit for my certification for CNS in Acute Adult Healtlh. I'm also on the look out for any good Nurse Educator/Staff Development websites. So, if you know any, will you pass them on to me. I am excited about all the things we can discuss as educators and I'm looking forward in meeting all of you in this forum. God Bless, Sherry.

Hi all. I am a clinical skills facilitator in the UK. My role involves teaching both the theory and practice of clinical procedures/skills.

I am based within the skills lab and get to educate nursing and Medical staff in how to do it!

I don't have the normal list of letter after my name, no degrees etc just 20+ years of rolling my sleeves up, however I have been known to use the occasional referance to a article, so it is evidence based but normally the evidence comes from sucess in practice.

Nice to read all the post on the variety of roles nurse educators are doing.

Anymore in the UK

right place right time, i always taught in practice and volunteered to help on every course going so i was known to those you need to know. the job came up as project manager to commission a skills lab, since then i suppose i just stayed and now i run the lab.

as to what i teach - well i introduce myself when teaching as "the person who teaches you to inflict pain on your patient legally" - it seem i teach insertion of needles from venepunture to central lines.

i will also teach bed bathing, communication and obtaining consent, it all depends on the group and what thier training needs are.

Hello, I am the Pediatric Clinical Nurse Educator for a major health system. I just started yesterday, so pray for me! I cover all of the pediatric services for our institution. I was a Flight Nurse prior to this. Nice to meet everyone!

Welcome, Duke. You say you are THE peds. educator. Are you saying you are the only one? At my institution, we only have one or two for peds (it is a childrens hospital within an adult hospital). I find this to be an issue when it comes to my department- oncology. Problem is, our educator has no onc. experience. How does this work in your institution?

Each unit has a specific Unit Clin spec/educator. I am the educator at Hospital Education who ties them all together and helps things flow across the sytem smoothly. Does that make sense? I share my office with the Oncology Educator :) She does have a lot of experience as well as the ones for each floor. We have to prove our experience in order to obtain our jobs. The communication between all of us works really well. Again, my responsibility is for Peds system-wide. I hope that answers your question.
