Need some pointers, advice, PLEEEEZ re becoming Nurse Educator

Specialties Educators

I have applied for an ADN instructor position at my local community college (the one from which I graduated 6 short years ago). Since then, I have had LOTS of clinical experience in different areas of nursing (med-surg, OB, newborn, vent patients, now critical care) and have obtained my BSN, as well as some graduate nursing courses. Due to the nursing shortage, they are now accepting BSN's for the position, though, of course, they would prefer MSN instructors. I fully intend to get my MSN. I am scheduled for an interview this Thursday. What sort of questions should I anticipate??? Any pointers for this interview??? (I REALLY want this job--LOVE to teach).:D :D :D

Thanx in advance for any advice!!!

Congrats Vicky!!!!

Bumping this thread up b/c I wanted to add a few more questions that I had put to me today, to share w any other job seekers out there.

This interview was 90 minutes long, I was really pumped, but I followed Dynamic's advice, and it went really well. Here is one of the questions...

Tell us three reasons why we should hire you for this job.

Yikes! I said I was efficient and organized, persistent-would follow through unitl I got the results I wanted, and I was at a loss for a third, so I said I have a good sense of humor. One of the inerviewers seemed to appreciate that reply, the other looked like she said to herself, how stupid.

Interesting twist was when they asked why I wanted to leave, and I said, Honestly, I feel like I am being micromanged to death, the one person said, OK, how do you deal with that? I said I research my case, present the facts to support my case, and do the best I can.

Anyway, it felt like it went well to me. If anything comes of it, I'll tell you more about it, it was for a managed care position.

Yes, I am in training all this week... and loving it!!!! :) Will "officially" start August 11th. Busy getting my curriculum and office in order. Have enjoyed meeting other staff members and especially enjoy meeting the students. Looking forward to a great semester!

Congrats!! That is really exciting. What class/area are you going to be teaching?

Congrats again and I hope you keep your enthusiasm high. Excitement about nursing and teaching is missing in many schools nowadays! Good luck!

Maternal-child health and medical-surgical nursing. Good that in my nursing background, I had to be "a jack of all trades" (small rural hospital--may have had an OB patient delivering one part of a shift, and helping with an emergent MI another part of the same shift).

I got me a new field CM job, for worker's comp! WoooooHoooo!

My supervisor to be said I was honest and sincere in my interview, and that was what she liked! So, from now on I say, don't play it too safe, be yourself. Being too stiff and giving those rote answers cost me the last interview!

Special thanks to Dynamic! For some great advice!
