In my experience, no. You definitely need your own policy, however. You will not be covered by the educational institution.

In my limited experience with NSO, there is no additional required for nursing educators.

If the clinical instructor is being held responsible for actions/non-actions of students, then YES! the instructor needs . The school may not cover sufficiently, especially if negligence can be proved.

If the clinical instructor is being held responsible for actions/non-actions of students, then YES! the instructor needs malpractice insurance. The school may not cover sufficiently, especially if negligence can be proved.

ITA - a separate malpractice policy is an absolute necessity. Beyond that, however, there are no extra charges for being a nurse educator (as there are for being an L & D nurse, a nurse practitioner, CNM, or CRNA). All NSO charges me (as a full time clinical and classroom instructor) for the "generic" nursing malpractice coverage is around $80/ year.

Just be sure you have your own policy. NSO is fine. Very inexpensive in comparison to others. The school/educational facility will not cover you, true. Check with your employer to be sure they understand this as well. Do not let them tell you differently. Just be covered individually and you will be fine.

I have to say the more I keep researching a career as a nurse educator the more I find negatives. First the pay is not the greatest;liability wise you are responsible for all those students under your own license. Are you really not covered if you are an adjunct? What are the positives to becoming an instructor? I know they are out there. Thanks :)

I realize your hesitation. I am an educator and nurse practitioner so my liability is immense. Just be sure you have coverage and you will have some assurance. You will just have to find your own way to handle the overwhelming fear it takes to be in utter control of the students. Just kidding. Yes, you are responsible, but, the instances of needing to use the insurance in the event of a problem is really low. I am now a medical legal consultant as well as NP and educator and I really like the consulting part of my career best. Just do it. You will love education, I just know it.
