Hello!

Pretty general question but as a new grad nurse at her first job, when would you consider your first year to be over. A year after officially starting the job or a year after getting off orientation? I'm not the happiest at my current job but want to give them a year. I also want to look good for other jobs I will apply to.

I answered "a year after your start date" -- but I don't think it is quite that straightforward. I think anyone in a position of hiring will see that you "gave it the requisite 1 year and then left" which doesn't look particularly good. I recommend staying a couple of months longer than the technical year so that it is not so obvious that you were "watching the calendar" and leaving as soon as you thought you could get away with it.

A solid 18 months would be even better. Take your time to find what looks like it will be a good fit, if not an improvement over the status quo.
