what is best in your opinions?

i originally wanted to do midwifery but i have the option of either doing adult of child nursing. now i keep doubting myself and thinking maybe it would be better not to specify in midwifery straight away incase i dont find it all i thought. im not sure on adult nursing as my cousin and a friend is one and they both said they wouldnt advise anyone to get into it - ie, patients wanting to hit you or get aggressive, which is my biggest problem, im not a confrontational person, i can handle gross stuff, i work in microbiology so wee, poo, blood, sputum, toe nails are nothing new, only the closeness of contact would be, lol.
then everyone says to me 'ooo i wouldnt be a childrens nurse, id cry'. but although i think yes it would be sad, id be more concerned of the fact that they are obviously children, children when ill arent all that willing to let you come near them! lol (if youre a stranger to them i mean) then you have grumpy parents to deal with. neo natal nursing really really appeals to me but to get to that i have to do the training in an area im not sure about first.
then of course was midwifery which was my original dream, but the more i hear about people getting sued etc i get put off

so what are the pros and cons of each profession and which do you all prefer?

thanks!
sophie x (i like in the UK, so might be slightly different in the US or wherever else)

Sophie,

You didn't indicate whether you are a nursing student - or just thinking about it.

At any rate - there's plenty of time to decide. Nursing education turns out 'generalists' - that's how the curriculum is designed. You'll have plenty of time to explore a lot of clinical areas. Who knows, you may fall in love with an area that you know nothing about - like a friend of mine who ended up in nursing informatics.

All clinical areas have their good and bad aspects. But - just like when you fall in love, the bad parts just kind of fade away.

Relax - it's all good.
