What area to go into for Last Semester?

Nurses Career Support

Published

I was given a form to fill out to pick an area for my final semester of nursing school and I have no idea what to do. I am currently just starting the 3rd semester and was really surprised that they just randomly handed us this sheet one day, stressed its importance, then acted like we should fill it out and hand it in 5 minutes later.

My school gave us no advance warning or anything, but they said I really should have turned it in by today at the latest. First and second semester I did a med-surg floor and then a cardiac floor which was fairly similar to med-surg. I just had my first week in pediatrics and immediately liked it better.

That said, I have a number of concerns. For one, I have a DUI background (I KNOW, no advice on that, just putting that in there for consideration) and have no healthcare experience. I am a 26 year old MALE if that makes a difference. My clinical instructors have been telling me to do med-surg because it would be the easiest to find a job in out of school. The instructor emphasized that last semester is like a job interview; it can get you a job if you really do well and are well liked. That is what this is all about: I want to finish school, take NCLEX a week later, then start my job within a month after that. I am not trying to sit around and take a break.

I was also told a lot of males end up in ER. The thing is, I know NOTHING about ER. I have been a member of this board for a while and am now finally starting to wake up and smell the coffee and realize it is time to start doing my research and truly investing ALL of myself into this career. Any advice? Should I request med-surg or ER? I want to do what I like, and honestly I wasn't a big fan of med-surg, but NUMBER ONE priority BY FAR: I WANT A JOB!!!!
