Torrance Memorial-RN New Grad 2013

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello everyone! I just wanted to make a thread for the upcoming program in August 2013. Good luck to everyone!! :)

Hi all,

I had my panel interview today and left feeling not so great about it. I was just a bit caught off guard by some of the questions and felt I didn't explain myself clearly. Oh well....I guess there isn't much I can do about it now but wait. Does anybody know when we should start hearing back?

Sorry about that.

a friend was offered a position today.

I think we're supposed to hear back by the end of this week, @Sophia432.

To all that were interviewed fora RN New Grad position at Torrance Memorial - would you be willing to provideinsight to how you were able to obtain an interview? Due to the highly competitive nature of New Grad positions in California I would like all or anyhelpful pointers to improve my chances at obtaining a RN New Grad position whenI graduate in May 2014.

For example, did you....

1. Contact the hospital beforehand to schedule a tour with a Nurse Manager

2. Did you know someone at thehospital that was able to pass your resume forward to HR/Nurse Manager

3. Have specific certificationssuch as PALS, ACLS, BLS, ECG and Pharmacology

4. Something special or differentyou did on your resume/cover letter to convey your enthusiasm for nursing

5. Graduate from a top-notchschool with a 3.7+ GPA

6. Involved with an organizationon campus or had prior nursing skill experience such as volunteering at ahospital as a Nurses Aid

Any insight would be much appreciative.

I did my medical-surgical I rotation at Torrance. I asked my clinical liaison and a friend who got into their program to put in a good word for me. Or at least, put my name on the HR's desk. I don't think certifications will do much. I graduated from UCLA but my GPA was around 3.5. I was in their accelerated Master program. No previous nursing experience but I did volunteer a lot out in the community and internationally during the program. Honestly, I'm not sure how they choose who to interview. I used to think TMMC was big on connections, but I've heard of many candidates who didn't even do their rotation there or knew anyone there at all. I even had a classmate ask me about my experiences because what she knows of the hospital was based on the information online. I also had a friend who had a combination of stellar GPA (as in, top of our class) and activism during the program and still didn't get an interview. Personally for me, I think it was the 2 employees pushing for me that got my name on that list. My suggestion, just list whatever you think makes you stand out. A strong GPA seems to be really common nowadays so you'd have to add extra umps to your application. Start volunteering now if you can. Good luck!

can anyone share their experience at torrance and how the program was?

have not seen the new one for the 2014 yet so had to post on here
