Starting on my own

  1. My situation is I am finally done with orientation and will be taking patient assignments on my own starting tonight. My preceptors have been awesome reassuring me that I do a great job, but it scares me to think I will be on my own. I won't always have that support person to go to right away, I know there will always be resources to go to, anyways I have been nervous for this day to come. Any advice or suggestions?

Don't be afraid to use those resources. Also understand it's going to be a while before your confident and comfortable, and you may even feel overwhelmed at times. This is normal, don't panic.

This is what you've been after for the last several years, this is your time. Best of luck to you!

Tweety, you are never alone. You always have the others on the floor if you have questions or need help. It is the good nurses who asks questions, no matter how many years they've been on the floor. The ones that scare me are the ones who think they know everything. Don't be afraid to ask or admit that you need help. We all need help from time to time. Remember to have fun, smile, laugh...You will be amazed at how far that goes with a patient. You'll be fine. Just relax.

Just remember we have all been there! If you are unsure of something PLEASE ask someone!!! You are not expected to know it all at anytime in your career, but especially now. Take advantage of the time you have now to ask and learn. When you get to a certain point people will assume you knw it and won't so freely teach. You are going to do great! Within 6 months you are going to feel like a veteran!
