Started out on Telemetry but think Med/Surg might be better.. What do I do?

Nurses Career Support

Published

So I just started on the telemetry unit and I feel VERY VERY overwhelmed. I currently don't feel happy to wake up and go to work. I don't enjoy what I do. I floated down to the Med/Surg unit a couple days ago and absolutely loved it. I felt much better and felt like it was the fit for me. I was hired on as a Med/Surg nurse and was given the opportunity to choose the unit I wanted to work on because the hospital is very understaffed. How would I go about talking to my preceptor/unit manager about possible changing unit.. Im so conflicted because I'm so excited to be a nurse but feel like this isn't a good idea at the current moment. Thanks!

It never hurts to ask. But how long have you been on the unit? What is it that is making you feel overwhelmed on this floor? You may feel just as stressed at times on the M/S floor. I work on both the M/S and tele units. I honestly find them fairly similar. I am however more interested in the diagnoses on the M/S floor. What's your career goal? Tele would be a great place to start if you are interested in going into critical care eventually.

Most organizations have clear guidelines about transferring to other departments, including the length of time that it takes to become eligible for transfer. Take a look at your company's policy & procedures to see where you stand. Then, you may want to make an appointment to talk to HR in order to make sure you have all your ducks in a row.
