Specialities for nurse practitioners

Hello, I am currently a nursing student that intends to go on and become a nurse practitioner. However, I not really sure how a nurse practitioner goes on to specialize in specifice fields like cardiology or oncology. Is there additional schooling required, are there residency programs or is training simply done on the job?
