Should I or should I not BECOME A NURSE??!

Nurses Career Support

Published

OOOOk. So I've been "browsing" through this site for quite a bit now and it's starting to annoy me that one day I'm dead serious about studying to become a nurse and another day I start doubting my choice. My class registration date is tomorrow and I'm planning on taking pre-req classes for the nursing program at my community college. I think I'm dreading the nursing school more than the career itself because I can see myself as a nurse even after doing numerous researches on nursing and knowing what it takes to work as a nurse. I know it's not a pretty job, but I still can see myself as a nurse. The problem is, I do not want to go through nursing school. UHHHHGGGG!!!!! :rotfl: It's not because it's nursing, but it's because it's SCHOOL! Writing papers and doing research projects! I don't mind reading and taking tests though. I would love to learn about the human body, diseases, etc and take notes and study them, but I hate writing with a passion. Now don't tell me "Well, other career is no different, you still have to study your butt of" because NO it will not be the same as nursing school. Nothing is LIKE nursing school and I do know that other careers need dedication and hard work in school. Also, nursing school will take so much of my time, sitting through lectures and doing labs and clinicals. I also need to work while going to school and it's tiring me out already just typing about it. Ok, I'm starting to worry as I'm making this thread. Will I like dealing with sick people all the time and sticking needles into them and seeing blood? But I would love to assess people and give them what they need. Uhhg. I've thought about other careers, but nothing beats the nursing salary and job security. I'm sorry, but I have to think about these things too. I need money to live, sadly. I am a compasionate person who cries when I see a person in horrible condition, but will this help me get through nursing school? I'm not going into nursing to make it my lasting career. I'm going in just for a couple of years and then I'm going to start looking into starting a business. I don't know. I don't know if I will even enjoy nursing. Maybe if I was going into a different career I won't consider dropping out of it in a couple of years to start something else. See what I do? How I go from nursing to something else? Well, my ultimate goal is to start a business I want to be my own boss. If I was your family member and just told you all this, what would you say to me? I've actually asked my parents to suggest a different career for me, but that did not work out. Do you guys have any suggestions for me? Seriously, if there was something else that pays as much as nursing right after school, I would go into it. If I like the career. Just throw out a couple of other careers and if I don't find them appealing, I'm going into nursing! :balloons:

Oh and the test that I have to take at the end of the nursing school also freaks me out because I do not want any set backs on my plan. And I've been hearing how difficult nursing school can be..I seriously think the accounting program at my school will be easier than nursing. Don't think I'm going into nursing all for the wrong reasons though because I'm NOT. I think thinking about your salary and job security is normal when you are starting to make your own money. Also, I won't abuse any of my patients once I do become a nurse :chuckle I would probably cry everytime someone old is ill because that is my soft spot :uhoh3: Anyways, before I go any further from my topic, please respond! Thank you.

If you want to start your own business, as you state, then why aren't you looking at business classes? Why not put your hard work/financial aid/time into an MBA? And, no, researching web sites cannot tell you what it's like to work as a nurse. If it could, 14 nursing students in my class wouldn't have dropped out last year after they started clinicals and got a taste of what it's really like. And these were students that for the most part were pretty committed to the idea of being a nurse, and some for the reasons that you state...salary and job security. I don't think that there's truly any way for you to know 100% before you do it if you are going to like it or not, but I would say with all of your self-doubts and frustrations you should re-examine what you say you REALLY want to do, own your own business, and work towards that. It seems ludicrous to me that you would waste your energies on anything other than your dreams. Hope you figure it out, and make it work for you!

It is extreemly hard to get accepted into a nursing program. Some areas have waiting list that are 2-3 years long. If you are not interested in making a career (not a 2 year job) out of nursing then I think you should leave the open spots for those students who truely want to be nurses.:angryfire I can tell just from reading your post that you have NO CLUE what nursing is all about. If you did, you wouldn't be "planning" to go to school for years, just to turn around and start you own business. Go to school for business. Why would you even consider nursing if you have so many doubts. I'm sorry if I sound like I am being rude to you but we take nursing very seriously here. Nursing is not a JOB, its a CAREER. A CAREER dealing with LIFE and DEATH. Nursing is not to be taken lightly. I think you should get your head together before you ever consider starting even pre-nursing classes. You do not plan on sticking with nursing, you have made that very clear, so my 2 cents is no I do not think you should go into nursing. Are you still in high school? Maybe you should go to see you GC. And no I would not want someone with your attitude taking care of me or anyone that I know!!:nono:

Researching did help me a lot because if I didn't do them and just went into nursing school I would've been SHOCKED. Plus, nurses on this forum told me what it's like and of course it's nothing like the real experience, but at least I know what to expect. I hope I dont get "weeded" out during school because that would be a waste of time :uhoh3: And it's because of that that I'm having doubts. No matter how much I look into this forum there is no way of telling whether or not I will like nursing, even if I keep telling myself that I will. Why won't I go into business? Because I don't want to have a business CAREER and it's perfectly fine for me to start a business without the business background. ANd I need money saved up as quickly as possible so I can do what I want to do, start a business and run it. I have always been interested in the medical field since I was a kid and I was hoping that this interest means that I will like nursing school, but nursing school is not all fun and games :rotfl: I don't know. I want to become a nurse, yes for the money and security, but also because I like the fact that I get to be hands on and use my brain at the same time and get to actually make a difference in someone's life everyday of my work, but for some reason I'm having doubts about starting nursing school. For some reason I'm wondering if there is something else than nursing that I can do. But again I think about the money and starting a business and working with the medical instruments and accessing people's illnesses that brings me back to nursing. And yet again I look for something else :o But I don't think this makes me unqualified to even try nursing and enroll in a nursing school. The poster above me thinks I'm some unethical human being and thus is not suited to become a nurse. If I do become a nurse I will be very aware of the fact that I'm dealing with life or death situations if in that siutation and will not take my job lightly. Thanks.

I'm planning on applying to two nursing programs and as long as you have a high GPA and have taken the required and strongly recommended courses you should not have a problem getting in. I have a great GPA and the required and recommended courses will all be taken care of by the time I apply so I should not have a problem getting into one of them. The other school does it by lottery so I bet lots of people will apply to that school so I'm not even counting on getting into that one. Also, I don't think it's horrible that I'm not willing to make nursing a long term career for me because lots of nurses do leave the healthcare industry, enough that there are debates going on whether or not there is really a nursing shortage, that there are enough nurses, but they just don't want to work as a nurse anymore. So are you saying that those nurses should not have become nurses in the first place? I'm sure they've done a great deal of wonderful things while they were nurses, but left because they found a passion for something else

I HIGHLY recommend getting your CNA and work in a hospital before you spend your time and $$$ on nursing school. I have worked in an intensive care unit for 2 years now and will graduate from nursing school next year, so it worked out for me. I hope that you find whatever it is that will fulfill you the most in life. God bless and best wishes...

adn program is not that expensive...

I dont want to work at a hospital yet because I'm afraid that it will make my nursing career shorter :uhoh21: thanks for the advice though. i woke up so i can get some things done before registering for my classes! wish me luck :chuckle

It sounds like you want us to say, go for it! But unfortunately, your attitude is hard for many of us to say that. Nursing school is going to be tough, but a person could decide to make it a good experience. Also, NS is teaching you the basics so that you can start thinking as a nurse. It is when you are working on the floor that you actually learn to be a nurse.

I think that you should look into other careers that you could parlay into business ventures that deal with medicine.

Ditto the CNA recommendation, and arrange to shadow a nurse for a while.

too late i registered in my classes already :rotfl:

Hello:

Before you think about nursing any other career pray first. :) I know this may sound strange because I am a stranger over the computer God knows what is best for us. Sometimes we make decisions without thinking then regret for wasting time  .

Best thing is pray then look at the whole picture. I am currently changing careers and it scares me. I am applying to nursing school only because God put me in a situation that I was hospitalize 6 times in 2004 and 2 times in 2005.

When I saw the RN's treated sick people and the attutitudes that was exhibited by the nurses :nono: . I wanted to make a difference on how people should be treated.

Nursing is a very serious career, but it is a wonderful one. I would like to show the sick that a nurse can have a heart:nurse: .

Hope this help,
