RN wanting a fresh start in Henderson, NV

Hello all,

My husband and I are planning to relocate to Henderson in a few months and I was wondering if there is anyone who has a recent job hunting experience they could share. I am awaiting my temporary NV license and want to get an idea of how things currently are in the Las Vegas job market as I am seeing many New Grad hospital positions available. Also, how much can I expect to make? We are from the rainy state of Washington and came down to vacation and see some friends and loved the atmosphere (away from the strip that is). We are ready for some sunshine, a nice house, and a new start for our family. I have already looked into Henderson schools and safe neighborhoods and really just want to know about my likelihood of landing one of the new grad positions. Thanks!

Hi.

Like yourself, I am a fellow new grad, and although Las Vegas isn't entirely "Anti-New Grad", most of the hospitals only accept a select few throughout the year. I am fortunate to have worked the last 4 years in a hospital in a non-nursing position, and have done a lot of networking throughout nursing school, so I have a Med/Surg (not my ideal unit ) job lined up. One thing I can say is that as many hospitals start going for MAGNET status, they are starting to require a BSN, so hopefully that applies to you because it will make the application process much easier. Sunrise Hospital and UMC have already begun accepting only BSN new grads or those ADNs/ASNs currently enrolled in a BSN program. Also, most hospitals will want you to have a Nevada license before you submit your application, and have your BLS certification through AHA. The more certifications (i.e. PALS, ACLS, NRP, etc) you can get before you apply for a position the better your chances of getting a call-back are, because the Vegas Valley is saturated with new graduate RN's due of the number of RN programs here. UMC just closed their Pediatric New Grad posting May 8th, but when I spoke to the nurse recruiter I was told she had over 60 applicants and just 3 spots. I know that the St. Rose hospitals also have a new grad program, as well as Sunrise.

Maybe call around and talk to HR departments to get more information. As I mentioned, my hospital does accept new graduates but it doesn't advertise the jobs as such. Other hospitals might be the same way. Good luck to you on your Job Search.
