RN/BSN and College Grades, Help!

by nursn2b

Hi Everyone,

I already have a Bachelors degree in Biology and also a Masters degree. I also have almost 5yrs clinical lab tech experience. But I am now keen to pursue nursing but, have some questions regarding my college grades in undergrad.

Here is the problem, although my overall GPA is 3.0/4.0, I failed my chemistry and 2 genetics related courses in college. In fact i got through my chemistry course the 5th time (i just never got really interested and never studied seriously for it, now I kick myself for doing that). If any consolation, I do have an A in Pharmacology.

My Masters GPA was 3.75/4.0 and never failed any course work or research for that matter.

I am wondering whether any nursing school would consider me for an accelerated second degree BSN with the above fail history in my college days. Also, is there any way to prove my capability to pursue an accelerated BSN by taking a college chemistry and genetics course now and getting an A or B in them!? Does anyone know about such courses that can be pursued individually online?

Thanks a lot for your help.

You failed chemistry 5 times? Is that what you are saying?

Yes Jerico, although I could have opted not to continue and taken soe other course instead of chem, i just wanted to prove to myself that I CAN do it. Also, for got to mention that I have an A in biochem also.

As always, it depends on the school.

However, you MS grades pretty much prove that you know how to be a serious student.

Your chemistry history is pretty sketchy and you might consider taking general chemistry again or the survey course for non-majors that most nursing schools require. Your A in biochem doesn't really wipe away the four F's in my mind since biochem is so much more specialized than general chemistry. Did you take a year of biochem (structural and metabolic)? Did you also take a year of organic chem? If so, how did you do?

I think you'll be a competitive candidate, especially if you do well on entrance tests, but I would consider the survey of chemistry course.

I wouldn't sweat the genetics grades quite so much.

You might also want to consider a direct-entry generic MSN/MN program for people with a previous non-nursing Bachelor's.

Your prior education history would make you very competitive in that type of program.

The financial aid options might increase for you in that program. Do a search here on allnurses!

Good advice. That's the way I've chosen.
