Questions about Nuses in California

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi. I just recently turned 19 & I'm from southern California & I'm currently doing my pre-requisites to get into the nursing program. I have a couple questions:

#1 I'm pursuing to finish an Associates of Science degree in registered nursing. I'm wondering if Registered Nurses of this rank are in demand in california or not.

#2 What is the starting rate for an ADN registered nurse in (southern) California? $20-$25, or $30 perhour?

#3 Since community colleges have these waiting lists... how long does one have to usually wait? Does it take years & is it worth it?

#4 Is it true that RN's are dispensed to clean the patient's excrements or is that the job of CNAs and LVNs (sorry if this seems like a weird question)?

How much of a chance will I get if I'll just apply to one school for the RN program? I'm still not familiar with other schools for RN & I have no means to commute other than my current college, so will I still have a good chance of being picked even though I haven't signed for multiple schools?

huumm well depends on that colleges way of doing things. some go by G.P.A. while others use a lottery and some just put you on the list. where in cali are you? just curious because you said there is only one college you could commute to..

I'm from Temecula, near Riverside. I haven't got my license yet so that's another problem. I really want to make this work so I can fund for my future in photography. Are you all RNs satisfied with your current earnings btw?:nurse:

Best advice is to give up this line of thinking, and find another temporary career.

Nursing is a calling: it is an art as well as a science.

I'm telling you straight - if you go into it for ANY other reason than you want to help people while making a reasonable living, you won't make it past your first clinical rotation.

Well of course the best thing is to be in a profession you like, but I have other hobbies & goals that I want to pursue & nursing is just one of them. I mean there has to be a posibilty that you can fall in love with it right. Other people who had other career plans in mind who ended up in the nursing profession seem to love it so I don't think I'd suffer from it at all. My new class for Spring semester starts this monday. Do you guys think I should apply for the RN program now or wait 'til I have my pre-reqs done? If I apply now, wouldn't that bump me up on the waiting list even though I haven't completed my pre-reqs, or is that risky business?

Might be good to know that as a nurse, you will constantly be needing to go for refreshers, and such, so it isn't really a situation of getting a certificate and then poof, you are done. It requires continuous learning.

This year so far I've been in class for many hours, working on learning the new computer system, and taking certification classes. It isn't a big deal, but it is something you need to commit to doing.

oh and I should add, you can probably find an equal number of nurses who thought they would love it who really are unhappy with their career choice. Just take a look at all the people trying to leave nursing.

aahhh yeah lived in menifee valley a while ago. not much out there. i took a major loss in pay to become a nurse. use to make double what a good nurse salary is. so for me money could be better but its good enough for me more about other things.

but I have other hobbies & goals that I want to pursue & nursing is just one of them.

plan on putting those on hold when you get into the program.

most definitely.

i think most will not let you apply, tell you have completed all but one or two of the pre-reqs. and those have to be in progress. check your school though, kinda hick vill over there, so might get lucky. but should apply as soon as possible. and focus on doing good on your pre-reqs that might help with the waiting more than anything.

What college in Menifee did you g to. Are you familiar with San Jacinto community college? That's where I attend & they say that that's like one of the major nursing schools for community colleges.

never went to college there not even high school. so dont really know. i am sure a lot has changed. just go check it out. stay with it and dont worry about what anyone tells you, just keep going and working hard towards reaching your goals.

BTW, all schools say they are top nursing schools. its not the school you go to so much as you. one school a friend of mine goes to has 98% pass rate the pate few years, but only about half the student who go there finish the program. some schools only have a 80% pass rate but 90% of the students entering finish so which is the best?? IMO it all comes down to you and your determination. good luck with what ever you decide. personallyu i would move to hermosa beach or something where there is more opertunity.
