No luck in finding Nursing job.

I'm an LVN student (army vet) in Dallas, TX and I'll be graduating July but I've applied to about 15 different places for positions. None of them will hire an LVN nurse fresh outa school. Well I did get like 5 calls from the places I applied to only for them to congratulate me on my pending graduation and to call them when I get a years experience. Yeah, it seems like all the Nursing Jobs out there either require an RN, or at least 1yrs experience. Its mind boggling how one gets the experience without getting the job. Gee!! can u say frustration? Any ideas? from anybody?

How about your school? Do they have any affiliation with hospitals that might be willing to take new grads?

Gosh, I am so sorry. Have you considered long term care? That is where most of the LPN's are in my area.

Yes, but I'm afraid if I get a job doing long term care I'll be stuck there forever and will still be denied hospital jobs cuz they'll say I have no "acute care experience"

I am a student in Kentucky and our school has a 98.6% Graduate employment success rate as well as Lifetime and Nationwide graduate employment assistance. So I would think that your school would help you.

That depends on what LTC you work for...........some of them do TPN, vents, etc.

It seems as though, if you did work in a nursing home for a year, the hospitals will be more apt to train you in acute care or whatever else seeing as though you have worked for a year. I've heard that you should get your foot in the door one way or another. I also understand that in Kentucky they are fazing out LPN's in hospitals, I'm not sure if they're doing that around the country though, in Arizona, they are fazing out LPN's in hospitals as well I think.

Will they not hire you because you are a new grad or because they don't want to deal with license pending?

I am in the same boat as you. I am not interested in LTC, and I have noticed that their are few LVN positions open in the hospitals. I was told the same things as you and they have also said they would only be interested in hiring me if I was already in a RN program. I did get a position at the Collin County Detention Center in Mckinney and have started orientation, but I am not sure this is the place for me.

I am new to here, but I have been practicing nursing as an LPN for almost 14 years. I am sorry to hear about your troubles getting a job. Keep trying. I think your idea about Long Term Care (Nursing Homes) and being stuck there is right. I have never worked in a nursing home, but I have friends that have right out of school. They have had nothing but trouble getting out of that type of work. Right now you need to concentrate on fininshing school, and taking your boards (exam). After all that then you go from hospital to hospital looking for a job, and someone will give you a break. Things will get better! Keep your head up high, and many great things will come your way. In 14 years I have done it all: ER, ICU, Clinic, Medical / Surgical, Peds, Geriatrics, and now I am working in the local school system.
