Hello just needed to get this out of my head and get some feedback as well. Would you take a 2.00 pay cut to go somewhere that you really want to work? Had a couple interviews, but not sure how to go about this latest offer. Its a great opportunity on basis of learning as well as building skills and it can be rewarding. How do you feel about negotiating pay rate? Is this even heard of in nursing? Just some honest feedback that's all.

A two dollar pay cut from how much? I think when I first started out, two dollars might have made more of an impact on my earnings but now (it's only been four years), two dollars wouldn't be that big of a factor for my happiness. Are there any differentials or other perks to factor in? You might find that your new shift differential is five more dollars an hour than your last place of business so there might be more to consider than just your base pay. Just a thought.

I would sit down and make a pros and cons list. Are there other trade offs, such as better benefits, shorter commute, more opportunities for advancement? Also make out a budget- will the new salary still be sufficient or will it truly be enough that you'll have to pare down your expenses? Only you can make the decision, but having thoroughly thought through it is essential.

In my RN experience the larger institutions were more likely to be unwilling to budge although I'd try talking to the HR person who is assigned to your case. Sometimes they will give you a full years credit for less than that as a nurse or count LPN years in at 1/2 time etc. As a NP there is no way I'd take even a 5 cent pay cut but its a whole different ball game and as a nurse although I would have been highly adverse to taking any cut it might be worth it as RoseQueen outlined. If you're not squeaking financially for 2 nickels to rub together, then Rose Queen said it as well as possible.

If you can afford it, go for it. Life's too short to be unhappy at your job.

I'd let them know that you are only hesitating because of the $2 cut in pay. Would they consider bringing it up. What's the best they can do.

From 30 to 28 which includes diff's. This seems like a huge difference to me and would be substantial in monthly take home.

Yea I have been comparing pros and cons. There's a longer commute though.....

this is exactly what I was thinking and its the reason I still haven't decided so I was thinking to talk to the HR rep who contacted me. I know I would love the unit and would learn so much. We will see what happens.

I have looked at pros and cons and the good thing is that I will learn so much more of the nursing that I should be learning versus what I do now. I have learned a ton where I am and I know that now its time to go to the next level in my learning. I really just wanted feedback from here about negotiating, but have a plan on what I will do already mapped out.

I would if I wanted to and I wouldn't justify it to myself. If you don't take you'll wonder what if you would have. If it doesn't work out you will always find something else. Don't let money be the determining factor. :)

Thanks and thats what I was kind of thinking to myself, to stop justifying it and just do it. I guess my issue was leaving if I didnt like it, I would feel like I was walking out. I just think its a great opportunity to get a new experience and learn alot more.
