Nurses Career Support

Published

Ok.. brief history. I have been an Registered Veterinary Technician for 8 years.. I have worked primarily private practice and now emergency... Completely burned out of the private practice...wanted to move higher on the career ladder and make a better salary...about 2yrs ago I started entertaining the idea of going to nursing school .. At that time...my "dream job" at a Ft. Dodge posted an opening (They are the animal health side of Wyeth Parmacueticals). I didn't get the job..:( but a professional contact of mine did, who is also an RVT..

Here I am two yrs later.. currently in my 1st semester of nursing classes... Well.. who happened to call on the phone Tues?? Ft. Dodge.. my contact had forwarded my resume to HR and they called me out of the blue.. that I have come with high recommendations for the open postion at Ft. Dodge.. It's a corporate style setting, which I like.. perks are AWESOME, 8-4:30 daily.. summers are 7-4:30 with every other friday off.. NO weekends, holidays etc..., 4 weeks immediate PTO.. the week between christmas and new year we are closed..full insurance, health club etc.. The people are grand and very nice.. Free, all expense paid CE anywhere in the WORLD...(We can travel, all expenses paid, with the company to any conventions that Ft. Dodge will be at) Tuition reimbursment etc... I am really struggling with what to do.. Oh yeah the pay is about 35K before benefits...

The nursing program that I attend doesn't have a night or weekend option... Anyone with any insight please critique!!!

Do they have positions in nursing like this??

Sounds sweet! You will never get all weekends and holidays off as a new nurse. You likely will start out on nights or weekends. The pay might be better though, 25.00 an hour to start at least if you work in a hospital, less in a nursing home. You have to decide if you want to work on humans or animals. If you were burned out before it could be a problem. We need nurses so I dont want to discourage you, but that deal is sweet and wont be found in nursing.

Can you make your nursing course part time and take the job while you decide which you prefer?

you will have to take prerequisite classes and you can take those part-time but once you are in the program it is full time.

What kind of program? How long is it total?

Clinical skills take time to develop. Give yourself a chance to learn and improve.
