Job Shadow before switching specialties?

I'm a floor nurse really ready for a change, and have an interest in a non hospital setting (Public Health), but am afraid to make the move without first seeing it firsthand. Has anyone ever job shadowed a specialty before moving on? Or would this look bad on my part (as if I am not committed enough?) There are two counties nearby that seem to have openings. I want to do my research first, as I want to know what I am getting into. Comments appreciated.
