In need of some advice about my career path...

Nurses Career Support

Published

A little background about myself, I am a 3rd semester BSN student expecting to graduate in May. I currently work as a CNA in a step-down unit and I already know that, although I do enjoy working there as a CNA and I like all my coworkers, I would not like to work there as a nurse due to the nurse-patient ratio and other issues I know the nurses have working there.

With that being said, I must say that I was set on working in the NICU upon graduation but now I am reconsidering this. I am now thinking about working as an ER nurse, maybe pediatric ER. I want to start off by doing what is best for my career and I also want to become knowledgeable in different areas before I work somewhere so specialized like the NICU.

I have also been lucky enough to be recommended for a job in a tele floor and also in a Med-Surg ICU. The nurses I was assigned to took notice of me when I was doing clinicals there and they believed I would be a good fit there. But I am not so sure about this, I did like it but I guess I'm having a hard time committing to one area of nursing.

So my question is, in your opinion, which area of nursing would be best for a new grad to develop critical thinking and skills?

Thank you all in advance for your input, it might be too early for me to be thinking about this but we will be having a preceptorship next semester and we will have to pick where we'd like to do this, so I want to already have a game plan on where I'd like to work when I graduate.
