Having kids and a career

Nurses Career Support

Published

I have one year of nursing school left - Yay! My plan was to go into pediatric nursing, possibly the NICU or PICU. I still want to do that, but I am wondering what all you nurses who are moms did. I recently got married, and we would love to have kids, soonish. I was thinking of just working PRN after kids, but how much full-time experience should I get post-graduation before going PRN? What would make the mist sense in my developme t as a nurse? Being home with my kids is incredibly important to me. Thanks for your advice!

My PRN job required a minimum of two years experience. It's important to realize that you may not get into your choice of specialty as a new graduate, too. The vast majority of people who need hospitalization are not babies and children- they are older adults.

If you're in your 20's, it might be a good idea to wait a few years. If you're beyond that, you need to do some soul searching and decide what your priorities in life are. And in any case, babies don't always happen when we "plan" for them to. I "decided" to have a baby and it took six years and lots of medical intervention. You may be luckier, but cautionary tale ...
