From Insurance to Nursing

First off, WELCOME to the forum!!

Secondly, I am new to this whole nursing thing too, as are plenty of the members on this site. Luckily for us, there are also plenty of seasoned nurses on here, ready and willing to share their knowledge with us. (Some really nice, caring people them nurses - who'd a thunk it? )

Anyway, poke around the forum. Alot of questions can be answered by looking through threads, or using the search feature. If you can't quite come up with what you're looking for, don't be afraid to start a new thread.

To get started in nursing, I'm taking a CNA course, and trying to get all of my pre and co-reqs out of the way before I start my RN, ASN program. If you have a specific nursing goal in mind, or if you just want to know how to get started, let us know. ("Nursing" is a HUGE area to cover - that's one of the good things about it - plenty of options to choose from!)

I'm in a good mood this morning, so I'm rambling. And I'll stop.

In my opinion the people who want to be a nurse should be. There are SO many types of nurses. You will find a niche. I suggest talking to a nursing instructor in the local nursing school. You do not want to talk to an advisor unless that person is a nurse also (ask when you call for appt). Do some more homework and I bet you will find your answers. Good luck!

I agree with the posts above. I am not a nurse, but know in my heart that it is what I want to do. Talk to a nurse or maybe shadow them so you can get an idea for yourself. Welcome to the site and good luck to you.

I'm in the same boat....I was an insurance claims adjuster for auto injuries for 10 years, I start nursing school in 3 weeks (YIKES) and I've been out of school for 13 yrs now....

I started getting information from my local community college because each college has their own entrance and application requirements, some are easier to get into than others.

I did insurance for 8 years, made great money at it but no longer found it fulfilling. My husband was an EMT at the time and suggested I take the EMT course to see if that was the direction I wanted to go. I went through the class and absolutely decided I did not want to be on an ambulance for 24 hours at a time (our daughter was really small at the time). The problem was I fell in love with the ER aspect during rotations and felt that I had finally found where I belong. I waited one year to get into an LVN program, graduated and have been an LVN in a trauma center for 2 years now. I'm still in the process of finishing pre and co-reqs for RN/ADN/BSN. I love that I only work 3 days per week, can still go to school and have a life. Although I've been criticized for not going straight through for the RN, I still have a mortgage to pay and I kindly remind the people that do the criticizing they can pay my bills for me while I go to school (which quickly shuts them up). I wouldn't change a thing. This was the nest decision I have ever made!
