Float pool at your facility?

Hi,

I have been in the float pool at a regional facility for 7 months and I am finally getting comfortable. My previous experience was in 2 smaller hospitals so we were jack of all trades.

Currently I am oriented to EVERY possible place we could be floated to...ICU's,NICU,ER,Postpartum,Med-Surg,Tele...everywhere.

My current regional facility offers NO $ incentive to be in the float pool. The main advantage as far as scheduling goes is that we only have to work every 4th weekend. Most if not all floors in this facility require every other weekend. We are still required to work nights and days however we are afforded a lot of flexibility with regards to scheduling. We can basically pick our work days and times (8's or 12's).

Here is my question....could you give me an idea of what the pay differences are at the facilities you work at for float pool?

Thanks for your help.
Have a great day....don't forget to smile...it makes 'em wonder what you're up to!!

I work in the float pool also. We make the same pay as the RN's who work a specific floor. We work every other weekend and holiday. I love floating though-you can keep out of all the drama and politics that go on on all the floors! The varied experience is great also. I learn so much.

I was hired as a new grad in the float pool, and float mainly in Tele, ICU and MedSurg at a Cincinnati area hospital. We get the same pay as other staff nurses, which I didn't see as a big deal when I first started (my first job and being naive)...but after 6 months I've changed my tune. Yes I get alot of great experience, and don't get involved in the unit "clicks", but feel we get dumped on by the regular nurses. We need some incentive pay for getting "jerked around" and putting up with all that we do.

I started in the float pool in our hospital, and I received the same pay as all the other RN's. That was 16 years ago, but holds true today.

The RN's in our LTC facility make the same pay grade as the ICU or ER nurses. I have a big problem with that. I'll save that for another post.

You accepted a position in the float pool, you do have a perk the other nurses don't have by working only every fourth weekend, and you have a lot of flexibility in your scheduling. Sounds pretty good to me. Good Luck

Our facility offers a Q-year cash bonus for RNs that stay in the float pool. The wage scale is the same but the bonus is intended to encourage staff to stay in the float position longer- we know that eventualy everyone bids out of the float pool.
