I don't think so!! It is a stressful career, sure, but we knew that going into it. I understand why those who went into nursing to feel understood or appreciated are disappointed. It is a service career, we knew that going in to it. If you are unhappy in your niche, there are plenty of other Nursing Jobs out there. Go find what satisfies you. I know 100's of satisfied nurses, so don't let the nay-sayers get you down. Not everyone burns out, and I dare say that many of those who do, have other problems in their lives besides their careers that contribute to their deterioration!

I agree that not all the job is peachy, but finding your "nitch" is crucial. I don't know of 1 job that is pain free and perfect.
Nursing does give you endless choices to grow, change, and find where you can be your best. I am proud to say my neice is in nursing school. She is strong, independent, and will definately be an advocate for her patients (just like her Aunt!). Each time I make a difference, a "save", or get the patient the treatment he/she needs (advocate), I feel empowered and that my little life on Earth is making a difference.
Each time something sad happens, at least I know I tried, and can comfort the bereived family. That is empowering also. When I feel burnout approaching, I train to a new Unit or skill and can "renew" myself. Working holidays sucks, but lots of careers have to do this also. (Besides, the potlucks are tremendous on holidays, so invite the kids down for a nibble).

Tanya--I agree with you. There are a lot of different options in nursing. You need to work around and find what works best for you.
I love nursing. My only concern is. I've found a nursing position I love. But in the past year I've seen changes. (Increasing in staff...additional responsiblities added etc.) It took me three different jobs to find this one. I hope in the next year I'll see improvement. And continue to enjoy my job. Because I do love people. And want to give them the care the DESERVE
