do you ever get comfortable with nudity - page 4

Hi, Where do I begin? I am 42 and have a good paying job as a letter carrier. The only problem, I absolutely hate being a letter carrier. The weather is far to challenging and I spend every... Read More

I didn't/don't have a problem with it. Even my first experience bathing a patient I didn't feel uncomfortable--just kept her covered up until it came time to clean certain parts. I was more afraid of hurting the patient but another RN told me that 'they won't break'. Now when I'm giving baths or whatever, I'll just talk to the patient about something or another, totally off the subject of me manipulating their privates ! :chuckle

Or maybe non-existant I once saw what I call a negative penis...at first I thought the patient didn't HAVE one. :chuckle

    I'm fine with the nudity.

Think the toughest part for me will be causing another pain (tough needle sticks, cath's, etc.). And doing so to babies and children will definitely ratch it up several notches.

Would love to hear experienced folks' suggestions on how to most successfully get over my little preoccupation about the above. Know I'll be fine when the time comes, but help me make it easier. Thanks!
When I first started in the ED, I had 'the fear' w/kids and babies until I saw an absolutely wonderful nurse take the IV stick fear away for a 5 year old dehydrated boy. She gave him an un-needled 22g IV cath to look at, play with, and investigate. She said 'I'm not going to lie to you, it's going to pinch and it's ok if you cry. But if you work with me I'll only have to do this once'.

Of course he yelped a little bit, but he knew exactly what was coming and he took it well. In a few minutes he stopped complaining about the dressing and tape once the fluids got going for him, and he started feeling better. It's a lesson I'll never forget. She's a great nurse and absolutely a treasure to work with.

This gave me a lot of confidence and insight into dealing with youngsters. You do what you can to minimize discomfort and then explain why it's necessary.

It doesn't have to be a kid, either; trying to find a vein on someone who's 88 or 98 for that matter can be a difficult thing to do, and after repeated attempts, well, you just feel sorry for the pt b/c you feel as if you're torturing them. However, you also realize that having access to give them medication/hydration/testing purposes is why you're there, and you do your best.

As far as the nudity goes, in the ED you just get used to it. Sure we get the ones who want to 'impress' you with the "Big Thunder" but after a while it's really a case of 'seen one, seen 'em all'. If "Big Thunder" can fetch me a cup of coffee, well, then I'm impressed; otherwise, :stone

One thing that I have really never gotten used to is the boob jobs on women in their 50's&60's. I mean, it just looks weird when you're putting heart monitor stickers on! But it makes the job easier :chuckle since you don't have to move 'em out of the way

And Tom, I'm with you. I'll take naked friends over naked strangers any time.

Boob jobs on 50/60 year olds? Does that mean they're more firm and they don't sag so much or something? Or do they end up sagging more?

Hey! Now there's the only good reason I've heard of for having a boob job! Bring those puppies back up front where they belong and return to a A,B,C,D,DD cup as before instead of those darn "long cups"!

No -- it means they got the nasty hard silicone ones or saline replacements from years ago -- like 15, 20 years ago. They don't sag or droop or do anything except stand at attention and it's kind of strange.

A new boob job on a 60 year old. Now that would be interesting! Can anyone say "Cher" :chuckle

hehehe that didn't even occur to me! I think I would like to see a couple, just for heck of it. I can see it now... oh, that's got to be funny

how comfortable some of the patients in the LTC facility were where we did our first term clinicals. Whenever someone was going to do a procedure, our instructor would gather a few students around to watch the student who was doing the procedure (actually, to watch the procedure being done.) It was amazing to me when one student was going to cath this guy (75+), and we were all standing around--for some reason we were waiting for something, I forget what, and the client was laying there, chatting with 4 or 5 women with his equipment clearly exposed---just as if it was just another day (which it was, for him.) It was a bit surreal.

As far as negative penises--yup, they do happen. I didn't know they could do that. I was putting a new condom cath on a client and saw what looked like a 1-2" stub coming out of his perineum. I thought perhaps he hadn't been circumcised (in fact, the male nursing instructor in the room with me asked him; and he wasn't). I just kept pushing back the skin, trying to find the meatus. Finally, it all popped out, 4-5 inches or so and looked like your normal circumcised equipment. I don't know how it manages to do that--was sort of like a jack-in-the-box! Other students in our class experienced the same thing with other clients.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone naked as I find human anatomy very fascinating and not the least bit embarrassing. It's not a sexual thing but an interest thing. My worry is that I might not be as sensitive as I need to be with people's feelings and fears. How doyou tell - other than the very obvious - how uncomfortable a person is getting naked for any healthcare professional?

as a male i think i can tell you a few of the reasons you see a negative penis - or whatever you called it - it's because sometimes if that area gets very cold the penis will retract back into itself - as it were - to stay warm - just like the testicles which can actually go up into the lower pelvic region when cold to try and maintain a proper temperature. with the penis it's actually kind of annoying and sometimes pushing the skin back to pop the it out hurts just a wee bit. also, if a guy isn't wearing underwear and the head of the penis is rubbing against his pants the penis might retract to avoid injury. also, if a guy is very overweight with lots of fat around the penis shaft sometimes the penis frequently retracts. i don't know why unless the fat pushes the skin up and over the penis and then the penis naturally retracts. i've never noticed a very large penis retracting but then i haven't done any surveys either.
also, sudden stress or anxiety will cause the testicles and penis to retreat into the body.

thank you for pointing that out to us michael. don't know what we'd do otherwise without you! :chuckle
i might be able to tell you about some that i've experienced.

Well, I can see I did the wrong thing trying to explain a little about male anatomy. Sorry to waste your time - I thought this was a professional-type site. My mistake.
    Sorry if I offended anyone.
