Do I Stay or Do I Go Now?

Nurses Career Support

Hey Y'all! Looking for some advice on a career move.

I am currently working in a busy busy metro Detroit ER, have been there literally 6 weeks shy of a year. I do not care for said ER, but have stuck it out for a year (so close), as I didn't want to tarnish my name or be put on the do not hire list. (I'm working nights, single mom with a 6year old=no bueno.)

I interviewed at the hospital I was working at prior to the switch(worked in ER for 8 Years) and was offered a PACU job. My start date would be 2 weeks before my one year. Since I left the previous hospital, and will be returning within the one year time frame, I get to keep my old CTO accrual rate (almost 9hrs/pay compared to 5.6) and hospital seniority.

I have previously spoke with the manager who said she would not put me on the black list due to my situation, but I did not get a reassuring vibe. But then again, sometimes I wonder if she is familiar with her own name..I digress.

My dilemma lies with the fact that I will be leaving before the year mark. I can't push back the start date because I will then miss out on the CTO/seniority. How do I ask to go contingent, keep my good name and rehire eligibility?

Any tips?

Why are you fearful of being placed on a do not hire list when you've committed nearly a year to the company already? Are you under contract? I think your fears are unwarranted, take the new job if it is where your heart is telling you to go.

I don't think her fears are unwarranted, in this fickle industry it's good to be cautious and check over your shoulder once in a while to protect yourself. Having a single income and being a single mother I can only imagine makes taking any kind of risks a little more nervewracking because there's no safety net or back up person to readily jump in and help. Nevertheless, I think things should be fine so long as the OPs performance record is clear. Leaving Just shy of 1 year of bedside service will not get you blacklisted unless you have a history of breaking contracts. Good luck OP, hope everything goes well!
